Akpabio Assures Tinubu of National Assembly’s Support for 2027 Re-election Bid
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has assured President Bola Tinubu of the National Assembly's staunch support for his 2027 re-election bid, vowing that no one can undermine his administration through the legislature. Speaking at the APC 2027 Presidential Campaign Council inauguration, Akpabio highlighted unprecedented cross-party participation as a sign of confidence in Tinubu's reforms. He also conveyed lawmakers' eagerness to join the campaign and offered advice to governors on focusing on their mandates.Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed the National Assembly’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, assuring the president that no one would be able to penetrate the legislature to destabilise his administration. He made the declaration on Wednesday, October 14, in Abuja, during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council.
Akpabio said Nigerians were increasingly recognising the administration’s reforms, which he argued strengthened Tinubu’s case for a second term. “Mr President, it’s because of your personae, because you’ve done well and you deserve a second term in office,” he said, adding that the National Assembly was “solidly behind” the president.
Akpabio also described the campaign council’s inclusion of politicians from different parties as an unusual development in Nigeria’s democratic experience since 1999. He highlighted the presence of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party.
According to Akpabio, their participation demonstrated that contributions to national governance could extend beyond party affiliations. He also said several lawmakers were eager to join campaign activities, recounting that senators had been pressing to accompany him to the inauguration, and indicated that he would seek approval to involve more lawmakers, including opposition figures such as Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro.
Beyond his assurance of legislative support, Akpabio urged governors to focus on fulfilling their mandates rather than pursuing other political offices before completing their responsibilities to the people. Drawing on his own experience as a former governor, he said, “There’s no need for you to start eyeing another position that is not available,” warning against abandoning constituents.
He also advised Tinubu to consider Soludo’s counsel, recalling the governor’s analogy: “If the clothes are not torn, why try to mend it? If you try to mend it, you are doing what? You are going to tear the clothes.” Akpabio’s remarks came as the APC began mobilising politicians and campaign structures ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
