AIK's Controversial Stance on Zadok Yohanna's Super Eagles Call-Up Sparks Debate!
Swedish club AIK has officially confirmed its decision not to release highly-rated winger Zadok Yohanna to represent Nigeria at the 2026 Unity Cup tournament in London.
The 18-year-old received his first-ever call-up to the Super Eagles squad, announced by head coach Eric Chelle, alongside eleven other new players for the upcoming tournament scheduled from May 26-30, 2026.
Yohanna's invitation had initially sparked a delicate situation for both club and country. His participation in the Unity Cup would have meant missing at least one of AIK's crucial remaining two league matches before the spring break.
Specifically the clash against league leaders Sirius on May 30, which coincides with the final day of the tournament.
This presented a significant potential blow for AIK at a vital stage of their Allsvenskan season, where they are keen to accumulate points and remain in contention.
Adding to the complexity, the tournament falls outside the designated FIFA international window.
According to FIFA regulations, clubs are only obligated to release players for national team duties during these official windows.
Matches played outside these periods are considered non-mandatory, granting clubs the discretion to refuse a player's release without facing sporting or disciplinary sanctions.
Therefore, AIK was under no obligation to allow Yohanna to travel.
Zadok Yohanna has been a standout performer for AIK this season, consistently driving the team’s offensive play.
In 12 appearances across all competitions, he has impressively contributed with five goals and four assists.
His last appearance saw him provide an assist in a 4-2 defeat to Djurgården before he was substituted due to an apparent injury issue.
This injury has kept him out of AIK’s recent 1-1 draw against Vasteras, and he is currently undergoing rehabilitation, which further complicated his potential release.
His exceptional performances have not only earned him international recognition but have also attracted significant interest from several top European clubs, including Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, and RB Leipzig, as well as renowned clubs like Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Ajax, who are reportedly monitoring his development closely.
AIK's recruitment manager, Miika Takkula, had previously stated that the club would discuss the invitation internally before making a decision.
Ultimately, the Swedish outfit confirmed its stance in an official statement: "AIK Fotboll are happy and proud that Zadok Yohanna has been called up to the Nigeria national team for the Unity Cup...
The decision not to allow him travel to London is partly because he is currently undergoing rehabilitation, but also for sporting reasons, as Zadok is an important player for AIK Fotboll."
The club concluded by expressing anticipation for Yohanna to represent the Nigerian national team in the future.
This decision represents a setback for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle ahead of the Unity Cup.
With Yohanna unavailable, Chelle will need to rely on other attacking options within the squad, such as Femi Azeez and Owen Oseni, for the opener against Zimbabwe.
The coach also has the option to call up a replacement player. Despite missing this tournament, Yohanna could still be considered for Nigeria's June friendlies against Poland and Portugal, with the final decision resting with Coach Chelle.
AIK, meanwhile, will be focused on his recovery and hopes to have him back for their upcoming league games against Hammarby and Sirius before the Swedish league's midseason break.
A decision on Yohanna's long-term future, amidst the strong transfer interest, is also expected in the coming weeks, especially with the summer transfer window approaching.
Yohanna's continued development at club level is widely expected to secure him another Super Eagles invitation in the near future.
