AI Startup Anthropic Secures $15 Billion from Microsoft and Nvidia, Fueling Tech Rivalry
Anthropic PBC, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude chatbot, has secured a staggering $15 billion investment from Microsoft Corp and Nvidia Corp, according to a Bloomberg report. This massive funding round positions Anthropic closer to major backers of its competitor, OpenAI, and highlights the escalating strategic stakes in the AI sector.
In a parallel move, Anthropic announced it will purchase $30 billion in computing capacity from Microsoft’s Azure cloud services. This dual development signals an intensifying collaboration between the companies, even as broader markets reacted with volatility—Microsoft shares fell 3.5% and Nvidia 2.8%.
The deal has sparked discussion around potential circular funding structures in tech, where cloud providers finance chip makers, who in turn invest in AI developers, with capital ultimately cycling back to technology firms. Some analysts warn that this cyclical flow may indicate a growing AI investment bubble.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the partnership’s mutual benefits: “We are increasingly going to be customers of each other — we will use Anthropic models, they will use our infrastructure, and we will go to market together.” Nadella stressed that this alliance complements Microsoft’s existing strategic relationship with OpenAI, reflecting a broader approach of diversified AI alliances.
Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees, Anthropic has quickly built a reputation as a safety-conscious AI developer, with enterprise traction in sectors like finance, healthcare, and developer ecosystems. The company previously raised $13 billion at a $183 billion valuation in September 2025 and serves over 300,000 business customers.
Anthropic’s expansion plans are equally ambitious. The company intends to invest $50 billion in building custom AI data centers across the U.S., including in Texas and New York, while October 2025 saw a multi-billion-dollar deal with Google to supply up to 1 million specialized AI chips, dramatically boosting its computing capacity.
The partnership extends to Microsoft’s Foundry service, enabling deployment of Anthropic’s models, including Claude Sonnet, on Azure. This fills a gap in Microsoft’s cloud offerings, which already include models from OpenAI, Meta Platforms, DeepSeek, and Elon Musk’s xAI. Additionally, Microsoft announced plans to integrate Anthropic technology into its workplace AI assistant, further embedding its models across enterprise tools.
Beyond Microsoft and Google, Amazon has also invested $8 billion and built dedicated AWS AI data centers and custom chips for Anthropic, making it a key infrastructure partner. These strategic alliances solidify Anthropic’s position as a pivotal player in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, where competition among tech giants is reaching unprecedented levels.
