AI Showdown: Users Abandon ChatGPT for Rival Claude

The landscape of artificial intelligence tools is witnessing a significant shift, with many users migrating to Claude in the wake of mounting controversies surrounding ChatGPT and its developer, OpenAI.
This exodus gained considerable momentum following a critical decision by Anthropic, the company behind Claude, to decline requests from the Department of Defense (DoD) to use its AI models for purposes such as mass domestic surveillance or the development of fully autonomous weapons systems.
This refusal underscored Anthropic's commitment to ethical AI principles.
In response to Anthropic's stance, President Trump issued an executive order mandating that all federal agencies cease the use of Anthropic's product.
Concurrently, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly announced intentions to categorize Anthropic as a "supply-chain threat," signaling official disapproval of the company's ethical boundaries.
Within hours of this development, OpenAI, in a contrasting move, publicized its own agreement with the Pentagon.
While OpenAI claimed its deal incorporated robust safeguards, the announcement reignited a widespread public debate concerning privacy implications and the broader ethical deployment of artificial intelligence technologies.
This confluence of events has propelled Claude into a dominant position. The AI assistant has rapidly ascended to the top of the free app rankings in Apple’s US App Store, notably surpassing ChatGPT.
Anthropic has reported unprecedented growth figures, with daily sign-ups reaching record highs. Furthermore, its free user base has expanded by over 60% since January, and its paid subscriber count has more than doubled within the current year, indicating a strong user reception to its offerings and ethical positioning.
For users contemplating this transition, the process of migrating data and concluding their relationship with ChatGPT can be streamlined.
Breaking ties with an AI assistant doesn't necessitate abandoning years of accumulated digital interactions and preferences. Instead, users can transfer their valuable data to Claude, enabling the new AI assistant to quickly adapt to their unique preferences and conversational history.
To export data from ChatGPT, several methods are available.
One approach involves accessing the 'Settings' menu, navigating to 'Personalization,' and then selecting the 'Memory' section.
Here, users can choose 'Manage' to review and update their stored information, copying any content they wish to retain.
Alternatively, for a comprehensive record, users can export their entire chat history. This is achieved by heading to 'Settings,' selecting 'Data Controls,' and then choosing 'Export Data.'
ChatGPT will then compile chat records into either text or JSON files, which are subsequently emailed to the user. It is important to note that this process may take a considerable amount of time, especially for users with extensive chat histories.
A more manual, yet effective, method involves directly copying key conversations from the chat history.
Users can also leverage ChatGPT itself by prompting it to summarize their main preferences, frequently discussed topics, and any custom instructions they have provided over time. These summaries can then be easily transferred.
Once the necessary data has been gathered, importing it into Claude is a straightforward procedure.
First, open Claude, proceed to 'Settings,' then 'Capabilities,' and ensure that the 'Memory' feature is activated.
It is important to remember that enabling the Memory feature typically requires a subscription to one of Anthropic's paid plans, such as Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise.
With Memory enabled, users can initiate a new conversation and use a prompt like, "Here’s some important context I’d like you to remember.
Update your memory about me with this." Following this prompt, the previously copied information or summaries can be directly pasted into the chat interface. For exported chat files, it is advisable not to paste raw logs directly.
Instead, users should prompt Claude to review the file and summarize key preferences, for instance, by stating: “Review this and summarize my key preferences.”
After the import, it is highly recommended that users take a moment to verify with Claude that the information has been accurately saved and integrated into its memory. User preferences can always be updated as they evolve.
For individuals seeking a complete disengagement from ChatGPT, merely canceling a subscription is insufficient to remove all personal data.
A more thorough deletion process is required. Users should navigate to 'Settings,' then 'Personalization,' and select 'Memory,' where they must explicitly delete any stored memory or personalization settings.
As an additional layer of assurance, typing “Delete all my memory and personalized data” as a final chat command can be beneficial.
Finally, users must proceed to their account management settings to permanently delete their ChatGPT account entirely.
