AI Powerhouse OpenAI Forges Alliance with Foxconn for Next-Gen US Hardware Development

OpenAI, the pioneering force behind ChatGPT, has embarked on a strategic collaboration with Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., widely recognized as Foxconn. This partnership aims to address the escalating demand for robust infrastructure essential to support OpenAI’s advanced artificial intelligence systems. The agreement focuses on the co-design and production of critical hardware for data centers, marking a significant step by OpenAI to strengthen its foundational capabilities.
Under this collaborative framework, Foxconn will play a pivotal role in co-designing and developing next‑generation data center server racks. The Taiwanese manufacturing giant will significantly expand its U.S. manufacturing operations to produce not only server racks but also vital components such as cabling and power systems, all manufactured domestically. OpenAI has affirmed its commitment to sharing insights into emerging hardware needs within the AI industry, which will guide Foxconn’s design and development processes. Importantly, the current agreement does not entail any specific purchase commitments.
This alliance is an integral part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to considerably grow its data center footprint and exert greater control over the AI supply chain. In recent months, OpenAI has secured multibillion-dollar deals with major cloud providers and chipmakers like Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Further extending its supply chain influence, OpenAI moved to acquire chips and components directly from Broadcom Inc. in October. Still, this aggressive infrastructure investment has raised concerns in the industry, with Bloomberg warning of a potential “AI bubble.”
For Foxconn, partnering with OpenAI aligns with its long-term goal of diversifying beyond iPhone assembly. By collaborating with a leading AI company, Foxconn demonstrates that it’s ready to support clients in integrating proprietary designs into modern data center infrastructure. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman underscored the strategic importance of this work, calling it a crucial move to ensure that the core technologies of the AI era are developed in the United States, thereby reinforcing American leadership and ensuring the widespread benefits of AI.
Beyond this initiative, OpenAI has launched a monumental long-term plan: earlier this year, it teamed up with Oracle Corp. and SoftBank Group Corp. to invest an estimated $500 billion in U.S. data centers and AI infrastructure over the coming years. This ambitious announcement came shortly after President Donald Trump returned to office. In parallel, Foxconn is also reportedly involved in the “Stargate Project,” an initiative designed to scale up AI server production on U.S. soil in response to rising demand while reducing reliance on foreign supply chains.
