Mohbad Family Drama Deepens: Widow Faces Surname Demand, DNA Test Ultimatum

The family of the late Nigerian singer Mohbad has intensified its directives toward his widow, Wunmi, insisting she stop using the Aloba surname pending the result of a court-ordered DNA test. Their position is rooted in what they describe as a commitment to justice and transparency in the handling of the singer’s estate.
In a statement jointly signed by Adedara Aloba, head of the family, and Joseph Aloba, a principal member, the family outlined a series of procedural steps aimed at safeguarding Mohbad’s legacy. According to them, the surname restriction and DNA demand form an essential part of ensuring due process in verifying the paternity of Wunmi’s son, Liam.
To ensure lawful and structured management of the late artiste’s estate, the family appointed three administrators: Samuel Ajewole Aloba, Engr. Ayodele Rasaq Famuyiwa, and Mrs. Alonge Ibukun Oluwaseun Aloba. A potential role remains open for Wunmi—conditional upon the DNA test confirming Liam’s biological link to Mohbad. The appointed administrators are empowered to apply for Letters of Administration to oversee royalties, bank accounts, properties, and intellectual property.
The family also stressed that Mohbad and Wunmi were never legally married—neither by statutory law nor customary Yoruba rites. They emphasized that the essential bride-price was never paid, thereby nullifying any claim of a formal marital union between the two.
On legal matters, the family clarified that Oladayo Ogungbe, Esq., of Ogungbe & Ogungbe Attorneys, will serve as the sole legal representative for issues involving the DNA process and estate management. Meanwhile, Dr. Wahab Shittu, SAN, will continue engaging with investigative authorities concerning Mohbad’s death.
In their concluding remarks, the family revealed that a new burial date and a comprehensive memorial plan for the late artiste will be announced after all internal deliberations and legal processes—particularly the DNA issue have been fully resolved. They described this approach as necessary to ensure respect and due diligence in honoring Mohbad’s memory.
