Africa's Digital Frontier: Paystack Unleashes 'Commerce' to Empower Businesses Online

Nigerian fintech startup, Paystack, has officially unveiled 'Paystack Commerce', an innovative suite of free tools aimed at empowering African brands to enhance their online sales of both physical and digital products. This new e-commerce toolkit is designed to simplify and optimize the selling process, making it more accessible and efficient for creators and businesses across the continent.
At the core of Paystack Commerce is 'Product Link', a sophisticated yet user-friendly tool that facilitates the creation of high-converting product pages. Businesses can now craft visually appealing displays for their offerings, incorporating custom background colors, photos, videos, animated GIFs, and personalized URLs.
Product Link also allows for detailed product descriptions, efficient collection of shipping fees for various delivery options, easy acquisition of delivery addresses, and streamlined management of orders and inventory.
Currently, the Commerce toolkit is freely available to businesses and creators operating in Nigeria. This launch signifies a significant strategic pivot for Paystack, which has historically been recognized for its robust payments platform.
Prior to this, Paystack's ecosystem included tools like invoices for payment processing and APIs for collections, disbursements, and reporting, which have been instrumental in building disruptive solutions across multiple industries. With Paystack Commerce, the company is making a substantial push into the broader e-commerce sector.
The genesis of Paystack Commerce dates back to 2019, when the startup began laying the groundwork for its expansion into e-commerce. Emmanuel Quartey, Paystack's Head of Growth, elaborated in a blog post that the company undertook several initiatives to deepen its understanding of the e-commerce market.
These included hosting roundtables with social commerce merchants, organizing a 'Holiday Commerce Bootcamp', and releasing a 'Holiday Gift Guide'. These programs provided invaluable insights into the specific needs of e-commerce merchants, strategies for maximizing sales, and innovative approaches, such as transforming Instagram into an effective pop-up store experience.
Complementing the 'Product Link' tool, Paystack has also introduced the new 'Paystack Merchant app'. This mobile application allows businesses to seamlessly manage their Paystack accounts directly from their smartphones. Merchants receive push notifications for new orders made through Paystack Commerce, giving them immediate access to delivery addresses and notes.
The app empowers merchants to create and receive payments in minutes, manage their financials—including requesting online payments, tracking owed amounts, and sending reminders for delayed payments—and handle various administrative tasks. These tasks include searching for orders and transactions, filtering products by price and units sold, marking orders as completed, processing customer refunds, and even contacting customers via WhatsApp, call, or email.
Paystack's timely introduction of these new tools and offerings aligns perfectly with the current global landscape, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to accelerate the boom in e-commerce. By providing comprehensive solutions, Paystack aims to equip businesses with the capabilities to find more customers, persuade them to make purchases, encourage larger orders, and ultimately cultivate loyal, repeat customers for life.
