2026 Jeep Cherokee Unveiled: Specs, Price, and Heritage Revival Spark Debate

After a three-year hiatus from the white-hot compact crossover SUV segment, Jeep is re-entering the market with the all-new 2026 Cherokee, a move that aims to avoid past strategic blunders seen in automotive history, such as Ford’s Model T replacement strategy. This belated return, however, positions the new Cherokee to potentially benefit from a shifting societal and regulatory environment.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee, internally coded KM, marks a significant design departure from its 2023 predecessor. Design leader Vince Galante drew heavily from the iconic XJ-generation Jeep Cherokee, known for pioneering the unibody SUV segment. The new model embraces a boxier aesthetic, balancing heritage with aerodynamic efficiency. Key design elements include a squared-off seven-slot grille, U-shaped daytime running lights reminiscent of the original XJ’s rectangular sealed-beams, and XJ-inspired trapezoidal wheel arches housing standard 18-inch and optional 20-inch wheels. The taillamps wrap around the corners, featuring a horizontal orientation that evokes Jeep’s classic jerrycan look. A boxy, upright D-pillar, embellished with a Germanic Hofmeister kink, addresses a major complaint of the outgoing KL Cherokee: insufficient cargo room, which has now increased by 25 percent.
Built on Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, a significant upgrade from Fiat-Chrysler’s Compact-Wide platform, the new Cherokee is considerably larger. It boasts a 6.1-inch increase in overall length and a 6.5-inch longer wheelbase, making it either the largest compact or smallest midsize SUV on the market. Despite its classification alongside compacts like the Honda CR-V, Ford Bronco Sport, Toyota RAV4, and Chevy Equinox, its dimensions push boundaries. Width is up by 1.5 inches, while height subtly drops by 0.3 inch, contributing to improved class competitiveness across nearly every interior dimension. Upper trim levels showcase a notable effort to enhance materials quality, with top-line Overland models featuring fancy seat perforation patterns and an available “Arctic” interior color scheme for the top three trims.
At launch, the 2026 Jeep Cherokee will be exclusively offered with an all-new hybrid powertrain. This system pairs a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with a two-motor planetary combiner hybrid system, drawing power from a 1.1-kWh lithium-ion (NCM) battery positioned under the rear passenger compartment. This powertrain architecture is based on a design originally patented by Toyota and made royalty-free through 2030, an opportunity Stellantis has seized. The engine alone produces 177 hp at 5,500 rpm and 221 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm. The net total output for the hybrid system is rated at 210 hp and 230 lb-ft, providing a balanced performance that subdivides the output of the old Cherokee’s 2.4-liter naturally aspirated and 2.0-liter turbocharged options. Impressively, its 3,500-pound tow capacity is only 500 pounds shy of the previous 2.0L turbo’s rating.
Fuel efficiency is a significant improvement, with estimated EPA city/highway/combined ratings of 42/33/37 mpg, a substantial leap from the previous generation’s 20–21/26–29/22–24 mpg. This efficiency translates to an impressive estimated combined range of 507 miles from its 13.7-gallon tank, vastly surpassing the older model’s 348–379 miles from a 15.8-gallon tank. Jeep estimates average American commuters could spend less than $100 per month on gas with the new Cherokee.
Naturally, all-wheel drive is standard on the Cherokee, similar to its primary competitor, the Ford Bronco Sport. The system, Active Drive 1, features a power takeoff from the transverse hybrid powertrain that drives the rear axle on demand, disconnecting when not in use to optimize fuel economy. This system offers Auto, Sand, Snow, and Mud programs, with a front–rear torque split varying from 100/0 to 50/50. While a more focused Trailhawk off-road version with locking differentials is not available at launch, it is expected to appear later. The current model offers an 8.0-inch minimum ground clearance, a 19.6-degree approach angle (second best in class), and a best-in-class 29.4-degree departure angle, indicating solid initial off-road credentials.
The 2026 Jeep Cherokee enters the market with a premium pricing structure, beginning at $36,995 for the nicely equipped base model, which includes a standard roof rack, a 10.3-inch cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a suite of safety features. The trim walk continues with the Laredo at $39,995, the Limited at $42,495, and the top-tier Overland at $45,995. The Limited and Overland trims will be available late 2025, with the base and Laredo following in early 2026. This pricing is notably higher than many compact hybrid SUV competitors; for example, it is $2,945 more than a base 2025 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid LE AWD and $2,960 more than a Kia Sportage S Hybrid. While the Honda CR-V Hybrid Sport is more expensive, its TrailSport Hybrid is significantly cheaper than the Cherokee Overland. On average, the 2026 Cherokee is approximately $3,827 more expensive than the top-three-ranked small hybrid SUVs, largely due to its hybrid-only launch, which eliminates the lower-priced, gas-only entry points offered by most rivals. Jeep appears to be banking on pent-up demand to justify this premium positioning.
