US Imposes Sanctions on Tanzanian Police Over Activist Torture Claims
The United States has sanctioned senior Tanzanian police official Faustine Jackson Mafwele for gross human rights violations. These include the detention, torture, and sexual assault of Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire during their 2025 visit to Dar es Salaam to observe an opposition leader's trial. The sanctions prohibit Mafwele from entering the US.
