Zootopia 2 Roars to Historic $1.7 Billion Box Office, Crowned Top Animated Film Ever!

While recent headlines have focused on other major Disney releases, James Cameron's "Avatar: Fire and Ash" notwithstanding, Disney's animated sequel "Zootopia 2" has firmly established itself as the undisputed top-grossing Hollywood movie of 2025 at the global box office. After two months in theaters worldwide, the film continues to lead "Avatar 3" and, in its eighth weekend of release, notched a significant victory by entering the prestigious list of the top 10 highest-grossing movies in global box office history. This remarkable feat was achieved by overtaking three major blockbusters, including last year's highly successful "Inside Out 2."
"Zootopia 2" has now accumulated a staggering $1.7 billion globally. This monumental figure positions it as Hollywood's highest-grossing animated film in history, surpassing even "Inside Out 2"'s $1.69 billion. Globally, it stands as the second-biggest animated movie of all time, only trailing China’s "Ne Zha 2," a non-Motion Picture Association release, which boasts $2.25 billion. This places "Zootopia 2" as the ninth-biggest global release of all time, ranking just behind superhero juggernauts like "Spider-Man: No Way Home" ($1.9 billion) and "Avengers: Infinity War" ($2 billion).
The film's impressive financial performance includes nearly $400 million domestically and more than $1.2 billion from overseas markets. A significant contributor to this international success is China, where the movie has broken records, raking in more than $600 million, or specifically $619 million to date. China's enthusiastic reception of the animal-filled metropolis is particularly noteworthy, as the market has often been challenging for Hollywood fare since the pandemic. "Zootopia 2" is now the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film in China, only slightly behind Disney’s Marvel epic "Avengers: Endgame" with $632 million.
Further highlighting its box office prowess, "Zootopia 2"'s global haul of $1.7 billion has placed it ahead of other cinematic heavyweights, including the controversial remake of "The Lion King" and the blockbuster sci-fi reboot "Jurassic World," which grossed $1.67 billion globally in 2015. "Zootopia 2" also achieved the distinction of being the fastest animated Hollywood film and the quickest PG-rated release to reach $1 billion globally, having opened ahead of Thanksgiving with a record-setting $156 million domestically and $559.5 million globally over its first five days.
Beyond its financial achievements, "Zootopia 2" has also garnered critical acclaim. It holds a "certified fresh" 91% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus praises the film, stating: "Cleverly layering a thoughtful message onto another crackerjack caper while solidifying Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as one of the most endearing buddy pairings in ages, Zootopia 2 more than justifies a return trip to the big city." This mirrors the positive reception of its predecessor, the original "Zootopia," which also grossed over $1 billion a decade ago.
The animated sequel, which cost a reported $150 million to produce, continues the adventures of rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and con artist fox Nick Wilde (voiced by Jason Bateman) as they reunite to pursue a mysterious new reptilian resident (voiced by Ke Huy Quan). The film was directed by Byron Howard and Jared Bush, with Jared Bush also contributing to the writing, and Jennifer Lee serving as a producer. Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman expressed immense pride, stating, "This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible. We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers Jared Bush, Byron Howard, and Yvett Merino and the entire team at Walt Disney Animation Studios for creating a film that connects so deeply with audiences everywhere. ‘Zootopia 2’ is an extraordinary achievement, and we’re grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life." As of now, Disney has yet to announce the inevitable "Zootopia 3."
