Zimbabwe rocked by $10m Netone corruption scandal, executives flee
Zimbabwe's second-largest mobile network operator, NetOne Cellular, is currently facing a significant scandal, with two of its senior executives now on the run. Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Christopher Muchechemera and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Nyasha Nyambuya are wanted by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) in connection with the alleged disappearance of over US$10 million from the state-owned telecommunications firm. Authorities state that both executives face multiple charges related to abuse of office and severe financial impropriety.
Sources indicate that Muchechemera and Nyambuya have successfully evaded questioning by the authorities, which has prompted ZACC to initiate a nationwide manhunt to bring them to justice. This incident is expected to intensify the already existing scrutiny of NetOne, a parastatal wholly owned by the government that serves millions of Zimbabwean citizens.
NetOne has a history of facing criticism regarding weak governance and recurrent scandals. This latest controversy has created a palpable sense of unease among the company's employees, who are already grappling with intense competition from rivals and a challenging economic climate. Past audits have consistently highlighted various irregularities in NetOne's procurement processes and contract management, raising persistent questions about the level of oversight within one of Zimbabwe's most strategically important state-owned enterprises.
