Zadok Yohanna Makes Sensational Brighton Switch, Disses Rivals & Fuels Fan Excitement

Nigerian sensation Zadok Yohanna has made a high-profile move to Premier League club Brighton & Hove Albion, signing a five-year deal that could keep him at the Amex Stadium until 2031. This transfer marks a significant milestone, as Brighton secured the highly-rated youngster's signature amidst fierce competition from several top European clubs, including Newcastle United, Chelsea, Manchester City, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund, and Rennes.
Yohanna, an 18-year-old left-footed right winger, has enjoyed a remarkable rise in his career. He moved from Ikon Allah Academy in Nigeria to AIK in 2025 and quickly made an impact, recording five goals and four assists in 12 appearances across all competitions for the Swedish side in 2026. His impressive performances positioned him as one of Europe's most sought-after young talents, earning him a maiden call-up to the Super Eagles for the Unity Cup triumph in May, though AIK blocked his participation due to injury.
The race for Yohanna's signature was intense, with Newcastle United initially emerging as frontrunners, even promising him immediate integration into their first-team squad. Chelsea and Manchester City also entered the fray, with reports suggesting City might loan him out for development, and Chelsea potentially placing him at their sister club Strasbourg. However, Brighton ultimately won the battle, agreeing a substantial €30 million deal with AIK, structured as a €28 million fixed fee and €2 million in performance-related add-ons. This transfer fee, also reported as £21.5 million, makes Yohanna the most expensive player ever sold by a Swedish club, surpassing Lucas Bergvall's €20 million move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2024, and setting a new record sale for AIK, eclipsing Alexander Isak's €8.6 million transfer to Borussia Dortmund in 2017.
In his first interview as a Brighton player, Yohanna explicitly stated his reasons for choosing the Seagulls. He emphasized the club's strong record of developing young players and their distinctive style of play. "Development. The way they develop players," Yohanna explained via Brighton's official YouTube channel. "I watch Premier League games a lot. I know the team that uses young players, and Brighton is one of them. They are really good at developing young talents." He also highlighted, "Their style of play. I think it will fit me a lot — the way they play." He also mentioned his conversation with Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler, who encouraged him to "keep my head up and keep fighting, and to work hard as well." Yohanna will officially complete his move once the transfer window opens on June 15.
Former Super Eagles forward Peter Ijeh, an "Allsvenskan legend" himself, lauded the transfer, highlighting Yohanna's exceptional qualities. Nicknamed the 'Nigerian Neymar', Yohanna is known for his "attacking and fearless" style, his ability to drive past defenders, and create "over coverage situations" for opposing teams, giving his own team a numerical superiority. Ijeh believes these attributes will enable Yohanna to thrive in the English Premier League, while also urging him to continue developing his flexibility, agility, and purposefulness. Yohanna, who is now the sixth Nigerian to join Brighton, expressed his delight, stating, "I'm really happy. I know where I came from, and I want to make my family proud. I will give everything I have, and I really want to win trophies with the team." He is expected to feature in Brighton's UEFA Conference League campaign next season, marking the next exciting step in his career.
