Zach Braff was a 'horrible dead body' during TV scene with Vince Vaughn

Bad Monkey? More like Bad Corpse.

Appearing alongside longtime collaborator Zach Braff at the ATX TV Festival over the weekend, Bill Lawrence gleefully told the audience about the "only thing" he's ever seen Braff not "nail" as an actor: playing a dead body on Bad Monkey.

Ironically, the story actually started with Lawrence — who created the Apple TV+ series, in addition to creating or co-creating Scrubs, Cougar Town, Ted Lasso, Shrinking, and more — praising Braff as an actor and director.

"First of all, I'm gonna give him props because he's such an accomplished director in TV and film, and I don't get to see him act as much, and for me, the most fun thing was I dragged him onto this show called Bad Monkey to act, right?" Lawrence recalled of Braff. "He's so good, and I've forgotten what it's like to see him stretch that muscle, you know what I mean?"

He continued, "Zach's the only actor at this level that I could do this to. He had to come to Florida [to shoot] and I was lonely, so he stayed in a condo with me and the other head writer — we called it 'beach buddies,' it's very sad — and he had to do like 4 or 5 days of like really intense work, but then [his character] dies."

Lawrence explained that, even though his character was dead and Braff, therefore. didn't have any more lines, he made the star stay in Florida.

"He just wanted to hang out with me," Braff joked. "He was like, 'We scheduled the morgue drawer scene for a week from now.'"

Thankfully Lawrence did, because it led to the creator's "favorite part" of the two working together on this particular project: Braff being a terrible corpse "take after take," which Lawrence claimed the audience "can still see" if they look hard enough in the finished scene between Braff's fake dead body and series star Vince Vaughn.

"Vince Vaughn is looking at his corpse to try to get clues and stuff and just riffing because it's Vince, and this is the only thing I've seen that Zach didn't nail. He was a horrible dead body take after take," Lawrence told the audience, laughing.

For his part, Braff explained, "The hardest assignment is, hey, you're a dead body, and we're gonna put bullet holes in your head in post, but for now, you're just a dead body painted blue, and Vince Vaughn is gonna improvise jokes over your dead body and... I tried my best. I was like holding my breath and everything, but he's so f---ing funny."

Bad Monkey, based on Carl Hiaasen's book of the same name, follows suspended detective turned restaurant inspector Andrew Yancy (Vaughn) who gets roped into a case of greed and corruption when a tourist finds a severed arm.

Season 1 is now streaming on Apple TV+.
