Susan Kihika Explains Reasons for Giving Birth in the US

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika recently returned to Kenya after an extended period abroad, which was confirmed to be maternity leave during the latter part of 2024. Her decision to give birth to her twin babies in the United States sparked considerable debate and criticism, notably from Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja and other members of the public, who questioned why she chose to seek medical services overseas rather than in her own county.
Addressing the public during Madaraka Day celebrations held at Heroes Technical Vocational College in Bahati Sub-county, Governor Kihika explained her rationale. She stated that her primary reason for choosing to deliver her twins in the US was to avoid potential discomfort and maintain a level of privacy from the county's medical staff, whom she referred to as her "juniors." Kihika elaborated, "You do know that I am the governor, right? So all the county doctors and nurses work under me, right? Now, surely, did you want me to be lying on my back as one of those doctors helps me deliver? And then when we go for meetings, he looks at me and sees me completely. What did you want? That is the reason I decided to hide the shame a little." She emphasized that it would have been inappropriate for healthcare workers under her administration to see her in such a vulnerable state.
Despite the criticism, Kihika also made a commitment to improving local healthcare facilities. She promised the crowd, "I will build a good maternity for you so that I ensure that you also get the same facilities that I can get. You need to back me." She also reminded the attendees of her commitment to her role, referencing her dowry and stating it wasn't paid for her "to go and sit at home."
The governor's explanation and particularly her reference to medical professionals as "juniors" drew sharp criticism online. Many netizens expressed disapproval, arguing that it undermined doctors and their profession. Comments on social media included statements like, "What a messed up statement to undermine the doctors," and "Doctors ni juniors wake???? ...Madam, that's not an excuse. Heshimu madaktari na kazi yao." Others pointed out that there is no hierarchy making a doctor junior to a politician. However, some social media users agreed with her decision, citing privacy concerns and potential unprofessionalism from local staff.
Governor Kihika's absence spanned five months while she was in the United States for the birth of her twins. This extended leave had also raised concerns among her constituents regarding the accountability of elected leaders who take lengthy breaks abroad. Upon her return, she hosted a gathering of friends and colleagues, including politicians Millicent Omanga, Beatrice Elachi, and Moses Kuria, who visited to welcome her and her newborn babies back home, bringing gifts and offering congratulations. Kihika expressed her gratitude for their support during this "special season of double blessings." It was also noted that Kihika has an older daughter for whom she threw a lavish birthday party in 2023, attended by prominent female leaders.
