Youth leaders push for transparency from new IEBC ahead of 2027 polls

A coalition of youth leaders has called on the newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to uphold the highest standards of transparency, fairness, and professionalism in its preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The appeal comes in the wake of ongoing political unease and public skepticism over the credibility of the commission, following President William Ruto’s appointment of Erastus Edung Ethekon as IEBC Chairperson and six new commissioners.
The appointments were made after a High Court ruling nullified a previous list of appointees made on June 10.
While the new team is now officially in office, sections of the opposition have voiced strong reservations, citing inadequate consultation and a lack of inclusivity in the selection process—a move they argue contravenes constitutional principles.
Speaking during a press briefing in Ruiru, Bishop David Munyiri Thagana, patron of the Munyiri Africa Foundation, amplified calls from youth across the country, urging the IEBC to exercise absolute impartiality.
“The commission must commit to professionalism and neutrality. Kenyans are looking to this new team to safeguard the credibility of our democracy,” said Bishop Thagana.
The youth leaders further emphasized that the integrity of the IEBC is critical to restoring public confidence in electoral processes and preventing the political volatility often witnessed around election cycles.
At the same time, the group expressed deep concern over the violent nature of recent protests, including those led by Gen Z demonstrators during the Saba Saba commemorations.
They condemned the destruction of property and the loss of lives, warning that such unrest threatens Kenya’s socio-economic fabric.
“While young people have a constitutional right to protest, we must reject violence as a means of expression. The country needs peace and stability now more than ever,” Thagana added.
In a bid to foster national cohesion and chart a peaceful path forward, the youth leaders proposed the creation of a non-partisan, multi-sectoral national dialogue platform.
They stressed that this forum should remain free from political interference and should focus on addressing the root causes of discontent, promoting inclusive governance, and uniting the country.
