World Cup Shocker: Underdogs Bosnia Hold Co-hosts Canada to Gritty Draw, Securing Historic First Point
Canada secured a historic first-ever FIFA World Cup point, drawing 1-1 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening 2026 tournament match. Despite dominating possession and chances, the co-hosts came from behind with Cyle Larin's late equalizer. This significant result sets the tone for Canada's upcoming Group B fixture.
Canada made history by securing their first-ever FIFA World Cup point, battling to a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their opening match of the 2026 tournament. Despite largely outplaying their European opponents and creating numerous opportunities, the World Cup co-hosts initially fell behind before a second-half equalizer salvaged a crucial point. This result marks the first time Canada has avoided defeat in their World Cup history, having been beaten in all three games in 1986 and again in 2022.
The Bosnians took the lead against the run of play in the 21st minute. Following a corner kick delivery from Ivan Basic, former Arsenal defender Saed Kolasinac flicked the ball on, allowing Jovo Lukic to slot home at the far post. This marked Lukic’s first-ever international goal, giving his side an unexpected advantage.
Canada, under coach Jesse Marsch, pushed hard for an equalizer throughout the match. Juventus striker Jonathan David squandered a golden opportunity in the 17th minute when he met a cutback in the center of the box, but his shot was too central and was dealt with by goalkeeper Vasilj. Derek Cornelius also blazed wide before the break, as Canadian attacks were often thwarted by a combination of wasteful finishing and resolute Bosnian defending.
The pressure from Marsch's side intensified in the second half. Tani Oluwaseyi's effort, following a terrific skill in the box, was saved, and the hosts were denied by further goal-line clearances. Sead Kolasinac made another excellent clearance by diverting Richie Laryea’s goal-bound shot onto the crossbar and away, while Nikola Katic also cleared off the line from another Tani Oluwaseyi header, preserving Bosnia’s lead.
The persistent efforts eventually paid off for the home crowd in the 78th minute. Substitute and Southampton striker Cyle Larin, making his first touch just 121 seconds after coming onto the pitch, collected Promise David’s clever flick and produced an emphatic finish to level the score at 1-1. This goal further extended Larin’s record as Canada’s all-time leading goalscorer to 31 goals.
In a thrilling end-to-end encounter, Larin almost secured a dramatic win in the dying seconds of added time, but his effort was blocked. Both sides ultimately settled for a share of the points in Group B. Canada is now set to face Qatar in their next fixture, while Bosnia and Herzegovina will take on Switzerland.
