Words and Pictures with Simon Mole

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

We spoke to performance poet Simon Mole about how he became a published author, why he finds children so inspiring and how he divides his time between writing, shows and workshops.

Simon Mole is an acclaimed children’s writer, performer and National Poetry

Day ambassador, with over ten years of experience using poetry with children and families. Former poet in residence for the National Literacy Trust, Simon works in schools and libraries across the country and overseas. His popular YouTube ‘write a poem in ten minutes’ videos are used by hundreds of thousands of children and teachers across the world each year and have been featured on the BBC.

Simon’s latest book, A First Book of Dinosaurs, is a collection of non-fiction inspired poems about dinosaurs; full of beautiful colour illustrations by Matt Hunt, the book is a jacketed hardback treasury, containing over 30 poems. It was a Sunday Times one to watch out for pick, was included in the Book Trust Great Books guide 2024-25, and features on the CLPE’s Power of Reading Programme. It will be followed by A First Book of Bugs in August 2025.

Simon is a positive and inspirational artist whose work explores issues that are important to young people, in a way that is accessible to them. He is a seasoned performer who regularly tours the UK, including shows at Southbank Centre, Hay Literary Festival, V&A Museum, Roundhouse, Norwich Theatre Royal, Latitude Festival and many more! He lives in Berkshire with his young family, and two extremely fluffy kittens.

A huge thank you to Simon for answering all of our questions. You can find out more about him on his website or instagram.
