WNBA Shocker! Valkyries Trade Flau'jae Johnson to Storm in Unexpected Move
In a significant move during Monday night's WNBA draft in New York, the Golden State Valkyries, less than an hour after selecting former LSU All-American and 2023 national champion Flau'jae Johnson with the No. 8 pick, traded her to the Seattle Storm. In exchange for Johnson, the Valkyries acquired the draft rights to Marta Suarez, whom Seattle selected with the first pick of the second round (No. 16 overall), along with a 2028 second-round selection.
Flau'jae Johnson has been a prominent figure and one of the most dynamic guards in women's basketball, renowned for helping LSU secure its inaugural national championship during her freshman season. Beyond her collegiate accolades, Johnson is also a well-known rapper signed with Roc Nation. Her collegiate career concluded with impressive stats, tying for the second-most wins and ranking sixth in points in LSU history. During her senior season, which ended in a Sweet 16 upset for the Tigers, she averaged 14.2 points, 2.5 assists, and 1.3 steals.
Valkyries general manager Ohemaa Nyanin offered limited details regarding the trade on Monday night, stating a need for time to formulate an eloquent response due to exhaustion and a desire to be thoughtful when discussing players and their potential contributions to the squad. Nyanin also declined to comment on whether salary cap implications played a role in the trade decision.
The Valkyries' acquisition, Marta Suarez, is a 6-foot-3 post player with a collegiate background that includes stints at Tennessee, Cal, and most recently TCU. During her season at TCU, Suarez showcased her scoring and rebounding prowess, averaging 17.1 points and 7.4 rebounds, while also demonstrating a solid perimeter game by shooting 37% from beyond the 3-point arc.
Meanwhile, the Seattle Storm made other significant roster additions, having selected Awa Fam Thiam with the No. 3 pick earlier in the draft. The Storm also boast a roster featuring other young talents like Dominique Malonga, the No. 2 pick from the 2025 draft, and the experienced 26-year-old Ezi Magbegor, who is entering her seventh WNBA season.
Storm general manager Talisa Rhea expressed the team's excitement about the trade, highlighting their objective to move up in the draft and secure another impact player. Rhea noted that the opportunity to add Flau'jae Johnson was particularly thrilling and unexpected, as they didn't anticipate her being available at that point. She emphasized Johnson's alignment with the team's needs for the current year and her crucial role in their future building plans.
