Wild New Frontiers: Lucid Gravity X Concept Teases Rugged EV Future!

The automotive industry is witnessing a significant trend towards off-road-focused treatments for trucks and SUVs, with manufacturers increasingly introducing variants designed for rugged terrain. Lucid, having recently launched its first-ever SUV, the Gravity, is embracing this trend by previewing an off-road-oriented version: the Lucid Gravity X concept. Unveiled at Monterey Car Week, this concept is described as a "trail-ready SUV" and is based on the production Gravity Grand Touring model, which boasts over 800bhp and an EPA-estimated range of 450 miles.

The Gravity X concept undergoes several key modifications to enhance its off-road prowess. Externally, its track has been widened, the suspension ride height significantly lifted, and special wheels fitted with chunky all-terrain tires. Protective skid plates are installed underneath, complemented by recovery tow hooks at both ends, indicating its readiness for adventurous excursions. The bumpers are uniquely finished in a dark matte "Astral Drift" color with brushed metal accents, designed for improved approach and departure angles. The concept also incorporates the regular Gravity's Stealth Appearance package, which darkens all exterior trim. Unique design elements include topographical maps of Big Sur and Death Valley patterned onto the hood's contours and the coordinates of Pebble Beach on the rocker panels, nodding to its debut event and location.

A notable addition is a modular roof rack system, designed by Lucid, which integrates crossbars, LED auxiliary lights, a roof box, and additional mounts for versatility. While Lucid affirms that the SUV's "exceptional aerodynamics" are retained, the beefier tires, roof rack, and added weight are expected to impact the Gravity's impressive driving range. Despite these rugged enhancements, the Gravity X maintains the luxurious and upscale interior characteristic of Lucid's vehicles. Designers have attempted to instill a "rugged" feel within the cabin by adding special door kick plates, orange seat piping and stitching, and cloth inserts within the leather chairs. The steering wheel features an orange stripe marking top-dead center, and occupants' feet rest on all-weather floor mats with metal "Gravity" logos.

Though Lucid has not confirmed production plans for the Gravity X concept, its introduction strongly suggests a future addition to the Gravity lineup. This move aligns with the broader industry trend and would position Lucid with a three-row electric SUV capable of directly challenging competitors like Rivian's off-road-capable R1S, offering a compelling blend of luxury, performance, and rugged capability.
