Wicked: For Good Stuns Audiences With Deep Lore & Box Office Magic

The highly anticipated release of the first teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping sparked a significant increase in viewership for past films in that franchise on iTunes. A similar phenomenon was observed with the first Wicked movie days later, as its sequel, Wicked: For Good, achieved unprecedented success at the box office. The new film is projected to earn approximately $150 million in its domestic opening weekend, a notable increase from the first film's $112 million during the same period last year. This renewed interest in the sequel has also driven audiences to watch the original Wicked at home, making it one of the most-watched titles on domestic Prime Video charts, surpassing other popular films like Playdate and Red One. According to FlixPatrol, Wicked peaked at the number two spot on Thursday before dropping to number three on Friday, with the controversial film After the Hunt holding the top spot on both occasions. Directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, After the Hunt, which deals with a Yale student's allegation against a professor, was a critical and commercial failure, grossing under $10 million against a reported budget of up to $80 million and holding a 37% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

In stark contrast, the first Wicked movie, released last year, garnered over $750 million globally, with a significant $475 million from domestic theaters. It received 10 Oscar nominations and boasts an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Wicked: For Good, also directed by Jon M. Chu, sees Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprise their Oscar-nominated roles as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. While its critical reception has been more subdued, with a 70% Rotten Tomatoes score, it is still expected to be a major box office hit. The film, which concludes the two-part adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical, was released on November 21, 2025, with a runtime of 137 minutes, featuring writers Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, and producers Marc Platt and David Stone. Its genres include Drama, Fantasy, and Romance.

Wicked: For Good is replete with numerous thoughtful callbacks and references to its Broadway source material, Wicked: Part One, and the iconic The Wizard of Oz. One such detail is the Universal Pictures logo, which for the film's opening, transforms into a vintage globe, specifically echoing the 1939 iteration – the year The Wizard of Oz premiered. This time, a tornado is visible behind the Universal lettering, symbolizing the twister that brought Dorothy to Oz and led to the demise of the Wicked Witch of the East.
