The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the reinstatement of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in all pre-tertiary schools across the country, following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama.

The decision forms part of renewed efforts to strengthen collaborations between parents, teachers and communities and improve learning outcomes.

This was announced in a press release dated Thursday, July 17, 2025, and signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at GES.

"The Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform the general public, particularly parents, teachers, and stakeholders in the education sector, of the directive from His Excellency, the President of the Republic, John Dramani Mahama, on the full reinstatement of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in all pre-tertiary schools across the country.

“This move is aimed at strengthening the collaboration and involvement of parents, communities and teachers in the delivery of quality education to Ghanaian learners," the statement said.

The service also announced that detailed guidelines outlining the structure, responsibilities, and financial accountability mechanisms for PTAs will be communicated soon.

"Further guidelines detailing the structure, roles, and financial accountability mechanisms for the effective functioning of PTAs will be issued in due course. These measures are intended to promote transparency, uniformity, and efficiency in the operations of PTAs nationwide," it added.

The Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government made PTAs inactive in second-cycle institutions following the introduction of its flagship policy program, the Free Senior High School Program.
