It sounds dramatic, but it’s true. If DreamWorks hadn’t released Shrek in 2001, the chaotic, absurd, low-effort-on-purpose humor we associate with Gen Z might never have existed. Let’s set the scene: In 2001, DreamWorks, the animation studio, dropped a strange little movie about a grumpy ogre, a talking donkey, and a fart-filled journey to love and self-acceptance. The movie is Shrek, and that moment gave accidental birth to Gen Z humor.

Think about it: no “Shrek is love, Shrek is life,” no Donkey reaction images. A world without Shrek is a world without brain rot, and who would want that? Against all odds, a movie once made by DreamWorks’ B-team became the accidental blueprint for an entire generation’s sense of humor.
