HUNTS POINT, the Bronx (PIX11) — It was the surprise of a lifetime for a family-run bakery in the Bronx.

Valencia Bakery had a sudden and unexpected brush with fame when several of their cakes landed a starring role in rapper Bad Bunny’s latest music video, “NUEVAYoL.”

The sweet surprise started with a phone call.

“It was a huge order because they ordered four huge cakes,” said Raul Valera, the president of Valencia Bakery.

Valera didn’t know what the cakes were for. He was just excited.

“My wife called me and said, ‘hey listen, we got this order, what do you want to do?’ and I said, ‘get it!'” Valera told PIX11 News.

It wasn’t until the day Valera and his team showed up to deliver the cakes that they realized what was happening.

“I turn around and it was Bad Bunny. What a surprise! I said, ‘let’s take our time in here.'”

The unassuming bakery on the corner of Edgewater Road and Lafayette Avenue has a storied history — 77 years of it. Started by veteran and Purple Heart recipient Joe Ripon in 1948, Valera started with one of the franchises 18 years ago. Then, a few years later, the business was in danger of shutting down.

“I was thinking of all the employees here, and the workers, and their families,” Valera said.

So he bought the whole business.

Now, Bad Bunny’s Benito Cake — a sponge cake with strawberry filling — is already giving both the business, and their dreams, a boost.

“We got a lot of visions to start expanding, it’s been a little tough here and there, but you know we got those dreams too,” Valera said.
