Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has called on security agencies to revamp their strategies for addressing insecurity, following the killing of at least 27 farmers by gunmen in Bindi, a community in Riyom Local Government Area, on Monday.

The Cable reported that the governor expressed deep concern that the attack occurred despite prior intelligence.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the affected community on Wednesday, Mutfwang said, “It is very sad that we got intelligence for this attack, yet the attack still happened. I’m calling on the security agencies to redouble their efforts; we need to reappraise our strategy and tactics.

“We cannot continue like this, and by the grace of God, we will soon bring this to an end. The perpetrators of the act must be arrested; the era of unknown gunmen is over.”

He also pledged government support for survivors and said plans were underway to organise coordinated mass burials for the victims.

Governor Mutfwang later extended his visit to Gwareng and Bachi, two other communities in Riyom LGA that were recently attacked.

Addressing security personnel, the governor emphasised the need for proactive engagement, saying, “Let me remind our security agencies again, you are not here for peacekeeping; you are here to defend the lives and property of Nigerians.

“Anybody who is threatening the lives of Nigerians is an enemy of the state and must be dealt with accordingly.”

Ezekiel Davou, the community’s youth leader, thanked the governor for his visit and solidarity.

He appealed for urgent support to rebuild destroyed homes and restore livelihoods, adding that despite the trauma, residents remain determined to stay and rebuild.
