Waterlogging brings Adabari & Maligaon to halt

Guwahati: A sudden, but intense spell of rainfall, brought vehicular movement to a standstill in several parts of Guwahati on Sunday, with west Guwahati's Adabari and Maligaon areas bearing the brunt of severe waterlogging.Adjacent areas along NH-27, including Boragaon and Gorchuk, also experienced significant disruption due to intense precipitation, a Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) official said. The downpour transformed the busy route into a virtual lake, forcing commuters to remain stranded on Maligaon and Adabari flyovers for approximately 30 minutes. The situation was further complicated by the absence of traffic police personnel at the critical junction during the peak of the crisis. Two ambulances were trapped in the traffic gridlock, potentially delaying emergency medical services to those in need. A motorcycle rider navigating a waterlogged area lost control of his vehicle due to the rapid water flow cascading from the subway adjacent to the Maligaon flyover. The powerful current of water proved to be too strong for the two-wheeler, causing both rider and bike to fall."I have been stuck in traffic for over 20 minutes. This happens every time there is heavy rain, but today seemed worse than usual," said Mriganka Haloi, a commuter travelling from Sundarbari.Another stranded motorist, Cintu Nath, expressed frustration over the lack of traffic management during the crisis. "There were no traffic police to guide us through the waterlogged area," he said.
