A recent online exchange has ignited a debate within the Nigerian music scene, pitting rapper Erigga against Afrobeats superstar Davido. The controversy began when Erigga, whose real name is Erhiga Agarivbie, took to X (formerly Twitter) to give a "shoutout to all the musicians who don't come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn," celebrating those who "got it out the mud" without financial privilege.
Davido, born David Adeleke, who has often been the subject of discussions regarding his wealthy family background as the son of businessman Adedeji Adeleke, responded strongly to Erigga's post. He mocked the rapper, stating, "No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top, imbecile." Davido further dismissed Erigga's sentiment, calling it "useless motivation" and questioned, "Deep down who like poverty?" In subsequent posts, he appeared to signal a potential exit from the industry, writing, "No worry o I go soon leave their music for una. GO MAKE MY BILLIONS... then that shit gonna be boring."
Erigga quickly fired back, suggesting that Davido was unnecessarily triggered by his initial comment.
