The Cameroon's Indomitable Lionesses have secured a coveted spot in the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), dramatically ending defending champions Nigeria's title defense in a fiercely contested quarter-final match.
The decisive encounter, held in Casablanca on Sunday at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, saw Cameroon triumph with a 1-0 victory, which also guaranteed their qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027 by reaching the WAFCON semi-finals.
The pivotal moment of the match arrived in the 19th minute when 20-year-old Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen unleashed a thunderous effort from distance.
Her powerful shot flew into the top corner, leaving Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie with no chance and giving Cameroon an early and crucial lead.
The Super Falcons, accustomed to dominance and holding a strong record against Cameroon in previous WAFCON meetings, responded strongly after conceding.
Nigeria immediately sought an equalizer, with Rasheedat Ajibade delivering a dangerous cross a minute later, though Gift Monday could not make a clean connection.
They continued to assert pressure, dominating much of the latter stages of the first half and creating opportunities.
In the 28th minute, Morinsola Babajide’s delivery found Jennifer Echegini in a promising position, but her effort was well saved, as Cameroon's defense remained organized to protect their slender advantage into halftime.
After the restart, Nigeria continued their relentless push for an equalizer, creating further chances around the Cameroon penalty area.
However, the Indomitable Lionesses’ defense held firm, and their goalkeeper made a crucial close-range save in the second half to deny Nigeria and preserve her side’s lead.
Despite the Super Falcons throwing everything forward in the closing stages, including a near-miss from substitute Ijeoma Okoronkwo whose left-footed effort drifted agonisingly wide, Cameroon held on through the final minutes to seal their memorable victory.
This defeat marks a significant turning point for Nigeria, as it not only ended their defense of the WAFCON title – ensuring a new champion will be crowned – but also denied them one of the four automatic qualification places for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria had entered the quarter-final as defending champions, boasting a dominant record against Cameroon in previous WAFCON meetings, including a 1-0 quarter-final win in 2022.
The Super Falcons had also consistently reached the knockout stages of every centralized WAFCON edition and aimed to extend their record to 10 appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Cameroon’s triumph, however, brought these aspirations to an end.
With this victory, Cameroon advances to face hosts Morocco in the semi-finals, who secured their spot by defeating South Africa 2-1 in their own quarter-final clash.
Meanwhile, Nigeria, having missed out on automatic World Cup qualification, will now focus on the challenging path of regrouping and will face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana later in the week for a place in the Inter-Continental playoff for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
