WAFCON 2024: Black Queens praised despite defeat to South Africa

Published 3 days ago1 minute read

South Africa head coach Desiree Ellis has lauded the performance of Ghana's Black Queens following their 2-0 loss to her side in the opening Group C clash at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Although Banyana Banyana secured all three points to begin their title defence on a strong note, Ellis was quick to acknowledge the quality and resilience of the Ghanaian team. "Take nothing away from Ghana, they are still a quality side," she said in her post-match remarks. "The first 15 minutes could have changed the game if we had conceded, but we stuck in and around, took control, and got the results that we wanted." Ghana created key chances, especially in the second half, but were unable to convert, with South Africa holding firm defensively.

Despite the loss, the Black Queens earned praise for their fighting spirit and tactical approach against the reigning champions.

Banyana Banyana will now shift their attention to their next Group C match against Tanzania on Friday, July 11, as they look to seal early qualification to the knockout stages.
