WAFCON 2024: Black Queens fall to defending champions South Africa in Group C opener
The Black Queens of Ghana crashed to defeat in their opening game of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Queens suffered a 0-2 loss to defending champions South Africa with both goals coming in the first half.
Ghana started on the front foot and created decent opportunities, notably Anasthesia Achiaa's effort that forced South Africa goalkeeper Andile Dlamini to tip the ball onto the crossbar.
However, against the run of play, the Ghanaians suffered a sucker punch from the defending champions.
Midfielder Grace Asantewaa was adjudged to have fouled Noxolo Cesane in the box, and their playmaker Linda Motlhalo stepped up to net a composed opener just before the half-hour mark.
South Africa quickly doubled their lead through a fine low strike from Jermaine Seoposenwe in the 33rd minute.
Asantewaa attempted to make amends for conceding the penalty with a long-range strike to test the South African goalkeeper while reigning Ghana Women's Footballer of the Year, Doris Boaduwaa, was unable to connect cleanly with a bouncing cross as the chance went begging following a swift counterattack.
After the recess, Kim Lars Bjorkegren's side pressed for the equaliser, enjoying a strong start to the second half.
However, they were unable to find the back of the net.
Alice Kusi and Evelyn Badu both saw their efforts come off the crossbar, while substitute Princess Marfo also forced a decent save from Dlamini.
Ghana's wastefulness in front of goal meant they suffered a loss on their return to continental football since 2018.
The Back Queens will be looking for positive performances against Mali and Tanzania to help advance into the knockout stages.
