A recent viral phenomenon on TikTok has introduced the concept of “human kibble,” sparking widespread discussion about its potential benefits and drawbacks. Originally synonymous with pelletized pet food, the term has been repurposed by online content creators to describe a large mixture of chopped, cooked, unseasoned whole foods prepared in bulk to last for a week. This trend, popularized by creator @myfoodisme2 in January 2025, involves combining ingredients like unflavored chopped vegetables, chicken breast, tofu, grains, and legumes into a single, comprehensive meal. The creator claims this concoction, which he has consumed for five years, simplifies meal planning and provides substantial nutrition, fueling his days with whole foods and minimal fuss.
The advantages of adopting a “human kibble” diet are primarily centered on nutrition and convenience. Experts like Emma Laing, PhD, RDN, director of dietetics at the University of Georgia, commend meal patterns that promote the consumption of vegetables and fiber-rich beans, which are often under-consumed in many diets. For individuals inspired by this trend to incorporate new, nutrient-dense foods, it can be an effective way to diversify their diet and fill nutrient gaps. Furthermore, for those who dislike the taste or texture of certain vegetables, finely chopping and mixing them into a “kibble” can be a clever strategy to increase consumption, as @myfoodisme2 found. From a practical standpoint, regularly prepping a large-batch, one-dish meal eliminates the need for complex meal planning, thereby saving mental energy. Wan Na Chun, MPH, RD, CPT, owner of One Pot Wellness, notes that this consistency can help individuals, particularly those with specific macro ratios or calorie targets, to consistently meet their nutritional goals. Moreover, the predictability of such a diet can offer comfort to those with dietary restrictions or food-related anxiety.
Despite its potential benefits, the “human kibble” approach is not without its pitfalls. A primary concern is the potential for boredom and dissatisfaction. Unlike pets, humans generally crave variety in their diets, and eating the same mixture repeatedly can diminish the pleasure derived from food. Dietitians suggest that rotating through a variety of foods—including different whole grains, legumes, seafood, spices, and healthy oils like extra virgin olive oil—with each meal prep could significantly improve both palatability and nutrient diversity. Another critical point is the potential for nutrient gaps, especially if meals are not properly balanced or if seasoning like salt is omitted. Chun highlights the importance of sufficient sodium for active individuals, as it is lost through sweat, and suggests incorporating salt or other flavoring blends to prevent electrolyte imbalances.
Food safety and storage also present significant challenges. While the TikTok creator’s massive bowl appears to last a week, the USDA recommends refrigerating leftovers for a maximum of four days to minimize the risk of foodborne illness. Beyond the physical implications, experts also caution against the psychological impact of labeling meals as “kibble.” Chun emphasizes that the language used around food matters, and referring to meals as “kibble” can foster a mechanical mindset towards eating, which may not be conducive to a healthy relationship with food. Additionally, this diet might not provide adequate calories for individuals with higher energy demands, such as athletes. Suddenly altering eating patterns to any new diet, including “kibble,” could also lead to digestive discomfort.
Ultimately, while cooking ingredients to safe temperatures makes “human kibble” not inherently dangerous, experts like Laing underscore that food serves a purpose far beyond mere sustenance. Food is deeply intertwined with culture, connection, and enjoyment. While a minority of individuals may find contentment in eating similar meals daily, the vast majority benefit from a more varied and flexible dietary approach that ensures both satisfaction and comprehensive nourishment. Therefore, while “human kibble” offers some efficiency, its drawbacks in terms of variety, pleasure, and potential health considerations warrant careful consideration.
