The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to María Corina Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition politician, for her relentless struggle to liberate her South American country from its descent into a brutal, authoritarian state. Machado, aged 58 and often referred to as Venezuela’s Iron Lady, has spent the past year in hiding following the July 2024 presidential election, where her political movement was widely believed to have defeated the incumbent president, Nicolás Maduro.
