Vanishing Act: Netflix Mysteriously Deletes Beloved ’80s Reboot Masterpiece!

The acclaimed animated superhero series, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, is officially set to depart from Netflix on February 21, marking another significant removal in the streamer's broader licensing shake-up. Produced by DreamWorks Animation Television for Netflix, this 2018 series is a modern reimagining of the classic 1985 Filmation title, She-Ra: Princess of Power, which itself was a spin-off of the beloved He-Man and the Masters of the Universe from 1983.
The Netflix iteration captivated audiences with its compelling narrative, following Adora (voiced by Aimee Carrero), a young soldier raised by the villainous Horde under Hordak (Keston John). Adora's journey begins when she discovers a magical sword that transforms her into the legendary warrior, She-Ra. The series boasts a powerful voice cast, including talents like A.J. Michalka, Karen Fukuhara, Marcus Scribner, and Lorraine Toussaint, among others.
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power has garnered widespread critical acclaim, evidenced by its impressive 96% critics' score and 84% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show has been particularly lauded for its diverse cast and groundbreaking queer representation, earning significant industry recognition. This includes a GLAAD Media Award nomination for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming in 2019, a Daytime Emmy nomination at the 46th Daytime Emmy Awards, and ultimately, a GLAAD Media Award win in 2021, where it tied with First Day.
The removal of She-Ra is part of Netflix's extensive February content purge, which impacts dozens of films and series. This list notably includes several other Netflix Originals such as Rebellion, Paris Is Us, and The Big Family Cooking Showdown, alongside fan-favorite titles like Parasite, Groundhog Day, Mean Girls, and The Terminator.
Cartoonist and creator of the series, ND Stevenson, addressed the impending removal on X, confirming that he had been aware of this for some time. Stevenson clarified that despite being branded as a Netflix Original, the platform functioned as an exclusive distributor rather than holding the underlying rights. He expressed sorrow, stating, “Years of hard work by many talented crews have ended up without a home,” and emphasized that the showrunners had no control over such decisions. Stevenson encouraged fans to revisit the series while it remains available and voiced hope that She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will eventually find a new platform or receive a complete physical release. The series now joins other DreamWorks titles like Turbo Fast and The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show, which also exited the streamer following the expiration of similar fixed-term deals, although some newer DreamWorks series, like Gabby’s Dollhouse Season 12, remain in production for Netflix.
