Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia Criticizes Big Ten, Praises SEC Superiority

A long-standing debate within college football about the superiority of conferences has recently been reignited by Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia. Appearing on the "Bussin’ with the Boys" podcast, Pavia launched a critique against the Big Ten Conference, despite it being the home of the last two national champions, Michigan and Ohio State. Pavia's strong stance came while discussing his post-season offers, where he asserted that playing in the SEC means competing against the best, unlike the Big Ten where, according to him, one can "ignore those calls."
Pavia specifically highlighted the difference in strength of schedule between the two conferences. While acknowledging powerhouse programs in the Big Ten like Ohio State and Oregon, he contended that the SEC presents a relentless, week-after-week challenge where teams are consistently tested. In contrast, he argued that the Big Ten's schedule includes less demanding opponents such as Purdue and Nebraska, implying a less rigorous path for its top teams.
Further substantiating his argument, Pavia focused on the defensive lines, particularly pass rushers, as a key differentiator. He claimed that the best pass rushers predominantly come from the SEC, making an exception only for Penn State’s Abdul Carter, who was a high NFL Draft pick. This emphasis on defensive talent underscores Pavia’s belief in the overall higher caliber of play and competition within the Southeastern Conference.
Pavia's own collegiate journey has been a testament to resilience and progression. He began at New Mexico Military Institute, a junior college, before transferring to New Mexico State for two seasons. Last season, he joined Vanderbilt, where he achieved a breakout performance, throwing for 2,133 yards and 17 touchdowns, complemented by 716 rushing yards and six additional touchdowns. Despite receiving lucrative offers, including a reported NIL offer exceeding $4 million from another SEC school after his impressive season, Pavia affirmed his commitment to play his final collegiate year with the Vanderbilt Commodores, demonstrating loyalty to his current program.
