While visa operations at the Abuja Embassy are affected, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos will continue its visa services. Additionally, American citizen services remain available by appointment or in cases of emergencies, ensuring essential support for U.S. nationals.

This significant development follows the US Department of State's recent authorization for non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members to depart the Embassy in Abuja. This measure was taken in response to a deteriorating security situation observed across Nigeria, prompting a review of safety protocols for U.S. personnel.

Concurrently, the Department of State issued an updated travel advisory for Nigeria. The advisory urges Americans to reconsider travel to the country, classifying the overall travel risk as "Level 3: Reconsider Travel." This heightened alert is attributed to pervasive issues such as crime, terrorism, kidnapping, civil unrest, and the inconsistent availability of health care services throughout Nigeria, indicating a broad spectrum of risks for travelers.

Furthermore, certain regions within Nigeria have been designated with a more severe warning, "Level 4: Do Not Travel." In the northern parts of the country, this includes Borno, Jigawa, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe, and northern Adamawa states. The primary dangers cited for these areas are terrorism, crime, and kidnapping, posing extreme risks to personal safety.

Other states also classified under "Level 4: Do Not Travel" due to unrest, crime, and kidnapping are Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
