Urgent Safety Alert: Common Anti-Spider Hack Hospitalizes Toddler, Mum Warns Parents

A mother has issued a critical warning to parents regarding the dangers of peppermint oil, a common household item often utilized as a natural spider repellent, after her two-year-old son required emergency medical attention. Elessame, the mother, shared her harrowing experience on TikTok, emphasizing that even a minuscule amount of the essential oil can be toxic, particularly for young children under the age of five.
Elessame explained that she had purchased a bottle of peppermint oil from a high street store with the intention of using it in a spray bottle to deter spiders. The incident occurred when her son came into contact with a seemingly empty bottle, which still contained a "smallest drop" of the oil. As she turned, the straw part of the bottle briefly touched his lip, causing him to react strongly.
Immediately, Elessame took action, brushing her son's teeth, giving him water, and wiping inside his mouth to try and remove the oil. However, after consulting online resources, she was advised to contact the emergency department. She called 111, expecting to be told to monitor him at home, but was instead instructed to take him to her local A&E within the hour.
At the hospital, doctors performed heart rate and blood pressure checks, which revealed that her son's vitals were lower than normal. She was informed that even a small quantity, such as one or two milliliters of peppermint oil, is considered poisonous and toxic, especially for children under five. Consequently, her son had to remain in hospital overnight for observation and care.
Through her TikTok video and accompanying caption, Elessame aimed to raise awareness among other parents, stressing the importance of keeping essential oils out of reach of young children. She highlighted the critical lesson that "natural doesn’t always mean safe," a sentiment echoed by many in the comments section who expressed gratitude for her warning and admitted their unawareness of the oil's potential dangers.
For those looking for safer alternatives to deter spiders, several options exist:
- Ready-made spider repellent spray: These are typically non-lethal, easy to use, and often come with a pleasant smell.
- Spider vacuum: This humane device allows for catching spiders without harming them. An integrated LED light assists in spotting them in the dark, with the instruction to release them immediately after capture.
- Spider catcher: Ideal for individuals who are squeamish, these tools feature a long handle that enables users to catch spiders from a distance and safely dispose of them without direct contact or injury.
Elessame's experience serves as a stark reminder for parents to exercise extreme caution with household products, even those perceived as natural, when young children are present.
