Baines' Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary, has undergone a remarkable transformation, shedding its 20-year-old thatched-roof identity to become an instant design star among luxury Botswana camps. Formerly known as Baines' Camp, this intimate, solar-powered safari base is now perched above the Okavango Delta’s languid Boro River, offering a glamorous and refined experience after an intensive one-year revamp by the renowned design studio Luxury Frontiers. Owned by tour operator juggernaut Abercrombie & Kent, the lodge continues to honor 19th-century artist and explorer Thomas Baines, famous for his landscape paintings of Southern Africa.
Graeme Labe, Luxury Frontier’s managing partner and chief design officer, articulated the vision behind the renovation, stating, “While the old lodge offered charm and character, today’s travelers seek deeper immersion, refinement, and emotional resonance. The new design vision aims to deliver experiences that are more contemporary and transformative.” The lodge's new aesthetic functions as a “living art gallery,” where elegant, open-air spaces accented with stone, natural grass, marble, carved oak, and brass blend seamlessly with the surrounding hippo-dotted waterways and dormant termite mounds. Architect Juan Cloete emphasized that the forms are simple and intentional, with clean lines and open volumes designed to frame views rather than merely decorate them. A thoughtful tribute to the past is incorporated through eye-catching installations of wooden planks reclaimed from the old camp, prominently featured in the main Explorer’s Lounge and the six handsome suites.
Each of the six suites at Baines’ Lodge offers an expansive 1,280 square feet of lush indoor-outdoor living space, ensuring every guest enjoys a river-facing deck. These luxurious accommodations are fitted with twin indoor/outdoor showers and a sleek tub, perfect for bubble baths under the moonlight. The contemporary interiors are a highlight, with a chic, safari-lite design. Guests can admire meandering baboons, zebras, and impalas through floor-to-ceiling glass windows from an ivory bouclé sofa. The rooms' color palette is meticulously fused with the natural surroundings: light gray rugs, throws, and seating echo the dormant termite mounds, while rich green wall paint and ceramic mugs reflect the grass and sprouting trees. African vases, locally-sourced beads, and Delta-inspired artwork lend authentic context to these sophisticated spaces. Suites also feature king-sized beds with linen mosquito netting, a long writing desk, and a living room with a generous minibar stocked with soft drinks, spirits, teas, coffee, and sweet treats.
Dining at Baines' Lodge is an integral part of the immersive experience, centered around the Explorer’s Lounge. Local chefs prepare sunrise-hour breakfasts, including both classic fare like eggs and bacon, and Botswana-style porridges, catering to early risers for morning game drives or those who prefer to sleep in. While lunch is often served at the lounge, guests can also enjoy off-site meals, such as a delightful buffet of quiche, beef stew, and butternut squash salad along a palm tree-dotted waterway. Post-game drive sessions are memorable, with guides parking in scenic spots, ensuring a selection of drinks. Evenings culminate in a fiery boma—an open-air meal around a campfire—where guests gather for aperitifs, including cocktails and South African wines paired with biltong and nuts. The short, sweet dining menus change daily and offer options for vegans, vegetarians, and those with gluten-free diets, featuring favorites like homemade bread service, Karoo lamb, local beef medallions, and decadent Madagascan vanilla bean poached pear.
Beyond the exceptional design and dining, Baines’ Lodge offers a range of top-tier activities. The communal outdoor pool, overlooking the Boro River, allows guests to beat the Botswana heat while virtually eye-level with half-submerged hippos. Classic safari land game drives remain a primary draw, but the lodge's prime Delta location enhances water activities. Guests are highly encouraged to experience mokoro rides, an analog boat used by Delta villagers to navigate through tall grass, papyrus, and lily pads, as well as adrenaline-packed motorboat cruises along the river's serpentine curves, with chances to spot thirsty elephants and water antelopes. For those seeking additional adventure, scenic helicopter tours of the Delta can be arranged at an extra cost. The lodge currently does not feature a gym or spa, though a future introduction is hoped for.
Baines’ Lodge welcomes guests aged 16 and up, making it an ideal destination for couples and honeymooners, though an adult family group could book multiple suites for a holiday. A crucial aspect of the lodge's operation is its commitment to empowering the local community; save for the Zimbabwean-born general manager, Beatrice Arabang, the lodge is predominantly staffed by local Delta residents, from erudite guides to lodge managers, providing direct economic opportunities. Sustainability is also a core principle: the lodge is fully solar-powered, utilizes water-efficient systems, and practices minimal waste. During its construction, building materials were sustainably sourced, and the roof is topped with local thatch, which naturally aids in cooling. While much of the lodge is on a single level, the suites and common rooms have not been adapted for wheelchair users and are not ADA-compliant.
Reaching Baines’ Lodge involves a scenic 15-minute small plane flight from Botswana's Maun International Airport (MUB) to a local shared airstrip, followed by a guided drive, often filled with fantastic wildlife sightings. Maun is typically accessed via Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB). The lodge is part of a portfolio of A&K Sanctuary properties, with its outdoorsy, tented sister, Stanley’s Camp, just a few minutes’ drive away, and the all-pool suite Delta classic, Chief’s Camp, a 10-minute inter-airstrip plane ride away. Abercrombie & Kent, the parent company, offers seamless and cost-effective multi-lodge packages through its Southern Africa portfolio, which many guests leverage for lodge-hopping experiences. Nightly rates at Baines’ Lodge, an A&K Sanctuary, start from $1,500.
