Unstoppable Queens! Super Falcons Crowned WAFCON Champions, Ignite Nation!

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have clinched their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, defeating host nation Morocco in a thrilling 3-2 comeback in the final at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat. This historic victory, often referred to as 'Mission X', saw the Nigerian team overcome a two-goal deficit, showcasing remarkable resilience and the indomitable Nigerian spirit.

The final match was a dramatic affair. Morocco initially took a commanding lead with goals from Ghiziane Chebbak in the 13th minute and Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute, sending the hosts into halftime with a two-goal advantage. However, Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu made crucial tactical changes, introducing Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini. The turning point came in the second half when Esther Okoronkwo scored a penalty in the 64th minute, pulling one back for Nigeria. Okoronkwo then set up the equalizer for Folashade Ijamilusi in the 71st minute. With five-time CAF Player of the Year Asisat Oshoala introduced, Okoronkwo once again proved instrumental, assisting Jennifer Echegini for the match-winning goal in the 88th minute, sealing the dramatic comeback.

The victory sparked nationwide celebrations and drew commendation from prominent figures. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu congratulated the team, stating, "This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together. You’ve shown the world the strength and spirit of Nigerian football." First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also extended heartfelt congratulations, praising the team's hard work, consistency, and declaring them "ambassadors of Nigerian excellence" who have "lifted the pride of our dear nation."

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau expressed confidence that the Super Falcons' triumph would inspire the men's national team, the Super Eagles, in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Gusau hailed the victory as symbolic of the Nigerian spirit, noting, “Our girls rose from the ‘dead’, as they say, and fought to victory. This was an extraordinary performance.” The Super Eagles are set to resume their World Cup qualifiers with crucial matches against Rwanda and South Africa in September.

Amidst the on-pitch drama, Moroccan fans employed a controversial tactic, shining laser lights onto Nigerian players, notably targeting Esther Okoronkwo. However, Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie demonstrated the team's composure and winning spirit with a witty post-match troll on Snapchat, captioning a celebratory video with Okoronkwo: “Their lasers didn’t work.” This clever jab underscored the team's resilience in a hostile environment.

Despite their continental dominance, the Super Falcons' global FIFA ranking remains a point of contention. Football analyst and Pulse Sports Nigeria’s managing editor, Joba, challenged FIFA to revamp its women’s national team ranking system. Despite their unbeaten run and 10th WAFCON title, Nigeria remains ranked 36th globally (though still Africa's top team). Critics argue that the current Elo-based system, which is updated quarterly and weights recent performance, does not adequately reflect breakthrough performances or regional dominance, failing to capture the team's current strength. Joba’s call for reform echoes broader discussions among stakeholders advocating for more dynamic metrics to recognize rising powers in women's football.
