University Student’s Piercing Horror: Exeter Teen Suffers Grisly Bathroom Accident

A shocking incident in a university hall's bathroom led to a harrowing experience for 19-year-old Tilly Yeats, whose nipple was tragically ripped during a routine shower. What began as a simple step into the shower quickly escalated into a nightmare when her nipple piercing became entangled in the shower door, resulting in a significant chunk of flesh being torn away.
Tilly, a university student based inExeter, recounted the terrifying moment in her “small” hall's bathroom. As she opened the shower door, the piercing, now caught, was forcefully extracted, taking with it a piece of her nipple. She described the horrific sight: “Half of my nipple was flapping off and the piercing was completely ripped out and hanging by a thread of skin.” The immediate aftermath was marked by intense pain and profuse bleeding, leading her to grab a towel to compress the wound and call for help from her flatmates. Several friends from a different flat rushed to her aid, encountering a scene of considerable blood, which, despite her usual composure around blood, made her feel as though she might faint.

Her friends provided initial assistance, carefully cutting away the piece of skin that remained attached to the piercing and attempting to plaster the nipple back into place. Although Tilly initially wanted to continue her evening after the shock, the persistent bleeding and the severity of the injury prompted her to contact the emergency medical helpline 111, who advised her to proceed to A&E immediately. At the hospital, she was attended to quickly, likely due to the ongoing bleeding. She expressed her anxiety when removing the plaster, fearing her nipple might detach entirely.
The medical staff at A&E had limited experience with such a specific injury; one nurse had never encountered it before, while another had only seen one similar case which had necessitated surgery. This information naturally heightened Tilly's fear. Fortunately, all the pieces of her nipple were still present, albeit detached and “flapping off,” meaning that reconstructive surgery was not required. A skilled nurse was able to meticulously stitch the nipple back together, providing immense relief to Tilly.
Post-recovery, Tilly is feeling “absolutely fine now.” While she notes a “slight tear still where the pieces of the nipple were put back together and you can see the lines where it ripped,” she is pleased that her nipple does not look “dishevelled.” She admits to being “upset I only have one nipple pierced,” but finds solace in having a “funny story to go along with it.” Despite the traumatic experience, the incident has not deterred her from considering further body modifications. She now advises caution when entering and exiting showers, especially with piercings.

Tilly also acknowledged that while some contemplating piercings have been put off by her story, she believes her situation was a rare anomaly, largely due to her own misstep. She passionately encourages others to get piercings safely from professional shops, emphasizing the confidence her piercings had previously given her and her wish to have the affected one re-done. Her remarkable tale was shared on TikTok, where it garnered over 90,000 views, with Tilly referring to it as the “worst day of her life.”
