University Academy 92 encourages young Mancunians to apply
University Academy 92 (UA92) is encouraging young people from less privileged backgrounds to consider higher education.
Trafford-based UA92 has urged young Mancunians to apply for university before the January 29 deadline.
The academy, founded by Manchester United's 'Class of 92' and Lancaster University, is concerned that many youngsters may not see higher education as an option.
Karim West, UA92's community engagement officer, works closely with young people across the city to break down barriers to higher education.
He said: "When I speak to young people about the amazing things they could achieve, you can see their faces change.
"They start asking questions with so much positivity - it gives you a warm feeling inside."
UA92 takes a different approach to higher education, welcoming students from diverse backgrounds.
The academy offers a flexible timetable, with no end-of-year exams and courses tailored to job roles.
Mr West added: "I wish I had the opportunity to go to UA92.
"It would have been a dream for me - the scholarships, guest lectures, the flexibility through the AM or PM timetable and the lack of end-of-year exams.
"You should never put too much pressure on yourself.
"You’ve got time to decide, and UA92 is here to help."
He believes UA92 is 'not just about academia but also personal development', and has seen students 'thrive'.
He said: "I’ve brought students in, seen them graduate, and go on to do amazing things.
"This is the place.
"The students aren’t just a number - we actually care about them."
UA92 aims to get graduates into the world of work with courses directly tailored to job roles.
