Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Mr. Piyush Goyal, set a target of 10,000 Geographical Indication (GI) Tags by 2030 at the GI Samagam in New Delhi, organised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and India Today Group. This goal will be achieved through a coordinated government effort, with a committee to be formed to oversee the process. Currently, 605 GI tags have been issued by the department.

He highlighted Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Vikas bhi aur Virasat bhi.’ He mentioned promoting various products through the ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio programme. He also praised the efforts of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra in promoting GI products, noting improvements in the department’s human resources and the transition to an online, time-bound process. He stressed the importance of better branding for GI products. He proposed collaboration with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure higher quality and tackle counterfeit issues. Additionally, he suggested leveraging platforms like GeM, ONDC, and e-commerce sites for better marketing. He proposed showcasing GI products at Indian embassies abroad to boost exports.
