Union agri min to launch AI-based bollworm mgmt
Nagpur: Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan will inaugurate an artificial intelligence (AI) based system for the management of bollworm, a common pest that attacks cotton, a major crop of the region, on Sunday.The AI initiative comes at a time farmers are grappling with the pink bollworm pest. The Bt cotton, a genetically modified variety made to be resistant to bollworm, has not performed well in a number of areas. There are reports of the pink bollworm developing resistance to Bt cotton, said sources.During his visit to Nagpur, the minister will also inaugurate the national soil spectrum spectral library. This is a repository of data on pH value, density, and other nutrients present in the soils of different areas across the country. The data has been prepared using the hyperspectral sensor of the National Bureau of Soil Survey (NBSS) and Land Use Planning (LUP) based in Nagpur.Chouhan will also address over 1,500 farmers at a programme planned at Suresh Bhat Auditorium. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will also be present along with him.
