Ukraine War Escalation: Zelensky Blasts Deadly Russian Drone Attack on Passenger Train
Ukraine has recently faced a surge in Russian drone attacks, including a major strike on a passenger train in the north-eastern Kharkiv region and an overnight assault on civilian infrastructure in the southern port city of Odesa.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the train attack as an act of “terrorism,” reporting at least four deaths and four missing individuals.
The train, carrying over 200 passengers, was hit near the village of Yazykove, with one carriage directly struck and engulfed in flames. The rail line serves both civilians and Ukrainian soldiers traveling to and from leave.
Odesa Hit Overnight
In Odesa, more than 50 drones targeted the city’s energy and civilian infrastructure. Serhiy Lysak, the city’s military head, confirmed three fatalities and 25 injuries.
The strike caused multiple floors of a residential building to collapse and damaged numerous other structures.
These attacks reflect an ongoing Russian strategy to disrupt Ukraine’s energy and transport systems, leaving millions without heat, electricity, or water amid one of the harshest winters in years.
Conflict and Diplomatic Efforts
The intensified drone campaign comes despite a recent round of talks in the United Arab Emirates, which included US negotiators.
While the discussions were described as constructive, key territorial issues remain unresolved, signaling that further negotiations will be necessary.
Russia continues to control roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory since its full-scale invasion in February 2022, while Ukraine grapples with daily aerial assaults and the humanitarian impact of infrastructure destruction.
