Ukraine Under Siege: Kyiv Faces 'Massive' Russian Barrage as US Arms Deal Looms

The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, faced a "massive attack" by Russia overnight, as confirmed by Mayor Vitali Klitschko, marking one of the most significant barrages on the city since Russia launched its full-scale invasion more than three and a half years ago. The assault resulted in a five-storey building being partially destroyed and at least three people requiring hospitalization. Across the country, Ukraine's foreign minister reported the use of hundreds of drones and missiles in this latest wave of attacks, prompting residents in Kyiv and surrounding regions to seek shelter in underground metro stations as anti-aircraft fire resonated through the night.
The intensity of these attacks has had immediate repercussions beyond Ukraine's borders. Neighboring Poland scrambled jets early on Sunday as Russia targeted western Ukraine, with the Polish armed forces describing these actions as preventative. These aerial maneuvers have become routine since Polish and NATO aircraft intercepted Russian drones in Polish airspace previously. Furthermore, Denmark reported drones flying over its airports, which it attributed to a "professional actor," while Estonia accused Russia of violating its airspace with warplanes. In response to these incursions, NATO initiated a mission to bolster its eastern flank, reflecting growing concerns about regional security.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has consistently warned about Russia's broader intentions, asserting that Russia would not stop with Ukraine and was testing European air defenses and the NATO military alliance. He emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to "open up some other direction" of conflict. Zelenskyy also recently expressed confidence that Ukraine could reclaim all its land from Moscow. These statements precede the latest Russian bombardments, highlighting the ongoing strategic tension.
In a contrasting stance, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at the UN General Assembly, denied any intention of attacking EU or NATO member states. However, he issued a stern warning of a "decisive response" to any aggression directed towards Moscow, specifically cautioning against attempts to down aircraft within Russian airspace. Lavrov also notably praised former US President Donald Trump for his pragmatic approach and for not imposing new economic sanctions on Russia, despite Trump's public musings on Putin. Russia has also denied responsibility for drone incidents over Denmark.
Amidst the escalating conflict, Ukraine is actively pursuing measures to strengthen its defensive capabilities. President Zelenskyy revealed ongoing efforts to secure a deal for the United States to purchase drones directly from Ukraine, alongside a "mega deal" for approximately $90 billion worth of American weapons. Ukrainian officials are scheduled to visit the US for talks on these significant arms acquisitions. Furthermore, Zelenskyy announced that Israel had, for the first time, supplied Ukraine with a US-made Patriot anti-missile defense system, which has been operational for a month, with two more systems expected in the fall.
On the ground, other critical developments continue to unfold. The power supply to the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's largest, has remained cut for a fourth consecutive day, a situation Ukraine attributes to Russian actions. Emergency generators are currently powering the plant's cooling and safety systems, prompting Ukraine's foreign minister to urge international concern for nuclear safety. Militarily, Russia claimed to have captured three villages in eastern Ukraine – Derylove and Maiske in Donetsk, and Stepove in Dnipropetrovsk – asserting a capture of about 0.8% of Ukraine’s total land area this year. Conversely, Ukraine reported one fatality and 12 injuries in the southeastern Kherson region, and damaged railways in the Odesa region, as a result of Russian barrages. A Ukrainian drone strike deep behind the front line also led to the suspension of an oil pumping station in Russia's Chuvashia republic.
