Ukraine's Daring Strike: Russian 'Rocket and Space' Centre Hit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that Ukrainian forces had successfully struck multiple targets deep within Russia, as part of what he described as Ukraine's 'long-range sanctions' strategy to diminish Russia’s war potential. Among the facilities hit was the "Progress Rocket and Space Centre" in Russia's Samara region, which is a key enterprise of Roscosmos involved in the manufacturing and operation of space launch vehicles and electronics production. Zelenskyy stated that the center was hit with FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles.

Additional strikes were carried out on the Savasleyka air base in the Nizhny Novgorod region, which Zelenskyy indicated housed aircraft used for missile attacks on Ukraine, and an oil facility in Ust-Luga, located close to the border with Estonia. Video footage shared by Zelenskyy on X appeared to show the aftermath of some of the strikes, with large columns of black smoke and flames visible at distant sites.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine later provided more details, confirming hits at both the Progress centre and the air base, and reporting that fires had broken out on the facilities' grounds. Intelligence indicated that the launch vehicles produced at the Progress centre are used to place Russian military, reconnaissance, and communications spacecraft into orbit. The Savasleyka air base, according to the General Staff, operates MiG-31K fighter jets, which are known to carry Kh-47M2 Kinzhal ballistic missiles.

Ukraine has consistently targeted deep inside Russia to increase pressure on President Vladimir Putin, weaken Russia's military capabilities, and impact its economy. This strategy has particularly focused on energy facilities, including oil refineries, terminals, and depots, which has led to fuel shortages in parts of Russia and Russian-occupied territories.

In response, the Ukrainian air force reported that Russian forces launched 152 drones and loitering munitions at Ukraine overnight on Saturday. Preliminary data indicated that Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or neutralized 124 enemy unmanned aerial vehicles, though strikes were recorded in 16 different locations across the country.

These Russian attacks resulted in numerous casualties and injuries across various Ukrainian regions. In the Kherson region, 28 people, including a child, were injured. A child was killed and 11 people were injured in a series of strikes on the Dnipropetrovsk region, while four were injured in Sumy Oblast. Local authorities also reported that a further nine people sustained injuries across the regions of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv.
