UK Incident: Police Vehicle Crashes During Custody Transfer

A British Transport Police (BTP) vehicle was involved in a significant collision with another car on Friday, July 3, in Harpurhey, Greater Manchester. The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 PM while BTP officers were in the process of transporting a 28-year-old man to custody, who had been arrested on suspicion of assaulting three individuals. The collision took place at the busy junctions of Queens Road and Rochdale Road, necessitating a large cordon and the immediate response of multiple emergency services.

Eyewitness accounts and photos from the scene depicted substantial damage to both vehicles involved. A blue Kia Picanto was severely damaged, appearing to be wrapped around a lamp-post. The police van also sustained heavy damage, having seemingly collided with railings in the middle of the road, with its front bumper completely detached. The presence of vehicles from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) highlighted the seriousness of the crash.

According to a spokesperson for the British Transport Police, emergency services attended the scene promptly. All occupants of both the civilian car and the BTP vehicle were treated at the roadside. Fortunately, no one suffered serious injuries, a detail confirmed by the BTP spokesperson. The 28-year-old suspect, who was being transported at the time of the collision, was later charged with two counts of assaulting an emergency worker and one count of assault, and has since been released on bail, as understood by the M.E.N.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service also provided details regarding their involvement. A spokesperson for GMFRS stated that firefighters were called to the collision on Queens Road at approximately 8:50 PM. One fire engine from Manchester Central fire station and the technical rescue unit from Leigh fire station quickly arrived. They confirmed that all seven occupants of the vehicles had managed to self-rescue before the fire service's arrival and were receiving care from NWAS colleagues. Fire crews subsequently handed the scene over to Greater Manchester Police before departing approximately half an hour later.
