UK developed horror game Phasmophobia set for movie adaptation
A movie adaptation of the horror video game Phasmophobia is officially in development.
British developer Kinetic Games has announced a partnership with Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster to produce a movie based on the online multiplayer ghost-hunting game.
Blumhouse Productions was also behind the movie adaptation of the popular horror video game Five Nights at Freddy’s. They are also behind other titles including M3GAN and The Black Phone.
Kinetic games director and Phasmophobia lead director, Daniel Knight, said: “We’re thrilled to officially announce that a Phasmophobia film adaptation is in development. It’s a big moment for the whole Kinetic team, and the start of something really exciting.
“We never could’ve imagined the incredible heights this game would reach when it launched five years ago, and we’re so thankful to our amazing community for the lasting impact Phasmophobia has had in the gaming space and beyond.
“Working with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster marks an incredible new chapter for the game, and we can’t wait to share more as the project develops.”
At this time, details surrounding the movie are limited, with no release window or casting confirmed. However, more updates are expected throughout the year.
Phasmophobia was an instant success upon release in 2020, achieving over 23 million sales in the years since.
It is a first-person horror investigation survival game, where the player can work alone or with a group of people to identify the type of ghost haunting a specific location.
The game was initially launched on the PC, before coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles in October 2024.
Developed and released by Kinetic Games, it became the best-selling video game on Steam for several weeks during the final months of 2020.
The game will receive one of its biggest updates yet later this month. The Chronicle Update, launching June 24th, will feature new media items to collect including the new Sound Recorder, and a rework of the Grafton Farmhouse location.
It will also overhaul leveling, rewards, and progression systems.
The film adaptation of Phasmophobia comes after the successful release of the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie.
Five Nights at Freddy’s, based on the popular video game series, was the highest-grossing horror movie of 2023.
Despite negative reviews from critics, it was well-received by audiences, grossing $297.1 million (£219m.).
A Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel will be released in December 2025.
