Uganda's Kasubi Tombs Fortified: Perimeter Wall Secures Ancient Site as Rebuild Nears End
The Buganda Kingdom has confirmed the successful completion of major reconstruction works at the Kasubi Royal Tombs, a significant landmark in the ongoing restoration of one of Uganda's most cherished cultural heritage sites. Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga officially announced that the iconic Muzibu Azaala Mpanga, which serves as the main tomb house and the sacred burial site for four Buganda kings, has been fully rebuilt. The extensive restoration efforts have meticulously focused on preserving the distinctive cultural, historical, and architectural identity of the structure, following the devastating fire that occurred in 2010.
A crucial enhancement incorporated in this latest phase of reconstruction is the installation of a robust perimeter wall, which now securely surrounds the entire 63-acre site. Additionally, the sacred Muzibu Azaala Mpanga itself has been independently fenced off to further strengthen security measures and uphold the sanctity of the royal grounds. To significantly minimize the risk of future fire incidents, a dedicated water reservoir has been constructed on-site. According to Katikkiro Mayiga, this newly built facility will enable a rapid response in the event of any emergencies, thereby providing crucial additional protection for the meticulously restored structure.
With all physical construction works now brought to completion, the Buganda Kingdom is proceeding with preparations for 'kusala kisassi'. This traditional cleansing and blessing ceremony signifies the final, customary stage before the revered cultural site is officially reopened to the public. The fully restored Kasubi Royal Tombs now stand as a powerful and renewed symbol of Buganda's profound cultural pride and enduring resilience, emphatically reinforcing the kingdom's unwavering commitment to safeguarding its invaluable historical legacy for all future generations.
