Udinese Star Maduka Okoye Shines, Clinches Award and Coach's Praise!

Udinese recently experienced their first defeat in four matches, succumbing 1-0 to Cremonese at the Bluenergy Stadium. Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye played the full 90 minutes, and despite his efforts, could not prevent the loss. His compatriot, Kingsley Ehizibue, was absent due to suspension, as Udinese registered their 15th Serie A loss of the season. This result leaves the club in mid-table with only one match remaining, impacting their push for a top-10 finish, a feat they haven't achieved since the 2012-13 season. Cremonese, currently in the relegation zone, desperately sought a favorable outcome to preserve their top-flight status.
The visitors quickly took the lead within ten minutes through former Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. Maduka Okoye initially saved the first attempt, but Vardy reacted swiftly to slot home the rebound. Udinese was awarded a penalty in the 25th minute, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review on the pitchside monitor. In the second half, Udinese pressed for an equalizer but struggled to break down Cremonese's well-organized defense. Hassane Kamara for the home side was initially shown a red card, which was later downgraded to a yellow after another VAR review. The match concluded 1-0 in favor of Cremonese, a result that significantly boosts their survival hopes, while Udinese looks to rebound in their final game of the season.
Despite the team's defeat, Maduka Okoye's individual campaign has been stellar. Prior to the Cremonese kickoff, Udinese presented him with the Player of the Month award for May. This marks his first POTM award of a brilliant campaign where he has established himself as a regular fixture for the club, making 29 appearances and conceding just 31 goals. He recently achieved his 10th clean sheet of the season, becoming the first Nigerian goalkeeper to keep ten or more clean sheets in one of Europe's top five leagues since Vincent Enyeama's feat with Lille in 2016. In the Cremonese match itself, Okoye made three saves and maintained a 100% pass completion rate, contributing three recoveries and earning a SofaScore match rating of 6.8, despite not being able to keep a clean sheet.
Udinese head coach Kosta Runjaic expressed his satisfaction with Okoye's maturity and evolution throughout the season. “Okoye’s evolution is in everyone’s eyes. It is important for our defensive phase, he interpreted the decisive moments well and he kept us several times in the game,” Runjaic stated. He highlighted Okoye’s hard work on himself, especially given the difficult start to his season without being able to participate in full preparation. Runjaic further noted, “Every player needs a different period to mature and reach his level, now he is playing quiet, focused, he is always present mentally, both in the game and in training.” The coach praised Okoye's lifestyle and resilience, stating he is very happy with the levels at which the goalkeeper is performing.
Okoye’s impressive club form provides a significant boost for Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle ahead of the upcoming 2026 Unity Cup and June friendlies. With Stanley Nwabali's uncertain club status, Okoye's consistent performances make a strong case for him to secure the number one position for Nigeria. He was given a starting spot against Iran, his first appearance since June 2025, before an injury sidelined him for the subsequent game against Jordan. Udinese will conclude their season with a challenging away fixture against Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, where Okoye will be aiming to end his remarkable campaign on a positive note.
