UCL Sensation Victor Osimhen: Snubbed for Award Despite Historic Goal Spree and Unrivaled Form!
)
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen delivered a spectacular hat-trick for Galatasaray in their dominant 3-0 victory over Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Tuesday night, a performance that has profoundly impacted both his standing in European football and Ajax's managerial situation. This exceptional display has propelled Osimhen to the top of Europe’s premier competition’s scoring charts, placing him ahead of notable rivals like Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, and Erling Haaland.
Osimhen's 'magical UCL night' saw him put Okan Buruk’s men ahead with a brilliant header from Leroy Sane’s cross just before the hour mark. He then doubled Galatasaray’s lead from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, before converting another penalty 12 minutes later to secure a comprehensive win. Ajax manager John Heitinga, reflecting on the match, acknowledged Osimhen's decisive impact, describing his opening goal as a "real centre-forward strike" and attributing the loss to his individual brilliance, despite feeling the 3-0 scoreline was harsh on his team.
The hat-trick raised Osimhen's Champions League tally to six goals this season, firmly establishing him as the leading striker in the competition after Matchday 4. Prior to this game, he was trailing Mbappe, Kane, and Haaland, but with Kane and Mbappe failing to score and Haaland managing only one goal in Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Borussia Dortmund, Osimhen now holds a clear lead. This impressive feat brings his total career goals in the Champions League to 15 in just 20 appearances, placing him on an exclusive list alongside elite strikers such as Erling Haaland (25 goals), Roberto Soldado (16), Ruud van Nistelrooy (16), Serhou Guirassy (16), and Harry Kane (15), for the most goals scored in their first 20 UCL matches.
Beyond the scoring charts, Osimhen’s performance broke several records. He became the first Nigerian player to score a Champions League hat-trick since Yakubu Aiyegbeni in 2002 and the first Galatasaray player to achieve this milestone since Burak Yilmaz in 2012. He has also demonstrated remarkable consistency, scoring in all three group stage matches he has played this season for Galatasaray, contributing significantly to their three consecutive wins, including a crucial winner against Liverpool in Round 2.
Despite his monumental achievements, Osimhen was surprisingly snubbed for the UEFA Champions League Player of the Week award. The honour was controversially given to Manchester City’s Phil Foden, who scored a brace in his team’s victory over Borussia Dortmund. This decision sparked immediate outrage and shock across social media, with fans highlighting the historical significance and impact of Osimhen’s three-goal haul. Many critics deemed the decision a "robbery," pointing out Osimhen’s multiple records and top-scorer status. Osimhen ultimately finished second in the fan voting, behind Foden, with Carlos Forbs and Mikel Merino rounding out the top four. As a consolation, Osimhen was named in the UEFA Team of the Week for Matchday 4, featuring in a front three alongside Foden and Merino.
The devastating loss to Galatasaray, largely fueled by Osimhen's historic treble, marked a critical turning point for Ajax. The club, suffering its fourth straight European defeat and rooted to the bottom of its group with zero points after four matches, took drastic action. Head coach John Heitinga was immediately suspended and his contract, which was due to run until June 30, 2027, was terminated. Assistant coach Marcel Keizer was also relieved of his duties. Technical director Alex Kroes described the decision as painful but necessary, acknowledging that the club had seen too little progress. Kroes himself offered his resignation but was urged to stay for continuity as the club begins its search for a new head coach. Osimhen’s brilliant performance effectively pushed the Dutch giants past the point of no return in their European campaign.
Osimhen’s return to full fitness and prolific form has positioned Galatasaray as 'dark horses' in this year's Champions League, with fans believing he can lead them deep into the tournament. While his immediate attention turns to the Turkish Lig, where Galatasaray will face Kocaelispor this weekend, his Champions League heroics have solidified his status as one of Europe's most feared centre-forwards, setting him up as a strong contender for the season’s Golden Boot.
