U-20 World Cup Thriller: Flying Eagles Brace For Epic Showdown Against Norway

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles are set to begin their quest for glory at the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile, with their campaign running from September 27th to October 19th. The team, two-time World Cup runners-up in 1989 and 2005 (losing to Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the latter), aims to end a 20-year wait for a final appearance and ultimately secure their first-ever title at this level. Housed in Group F, Nigeria will face Norway, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia, with their crucial opening fixture against Norway scheduled for September 29th at the Estadio Fiscal de Talca in Talca.
The spotlight is firmly on 18-year-old striker Kparobo Nathaniel Arierhi, who plays for Mjøndalen IF Fotball in Norway. Widely tipped as the nation’s next big attacking star, Arierhi has been christened “the new Victor Osimhen” for his exceptional pace and ruthless finishing. He previously fired Nigeria to U20 WAFU glory with a decisive brace in the final against Ghana. Despite a quiet U20 AFCON campaign earlier this year where Nigeria secured a bronze medal, Arierhi insists the team’s hunger is undiminished, vowing they are prepared to give everything to make their country, families, and themselves proud. He expressed excitement about facing familiar faces among the Norwegian national team, focusing on securing points for Nigeria. Fulham FC star Alex Iwobi has also encouraged Arierhi to emulate or even surpass Osimhen, acknowledging his great technique and composure as a number nine.
Alongside Arierhi, midfielder Abduljelil Kamaldeen from Kwara Football Academy and winger Tahir Maigana of Wireless FC are also vital to the team's ambitions. Kamaldeen, at just 16 years old, is the youngest player in the squad and carries the hopes of millions. He played a prominent role in the WAFU B U-20 tournament, notably scoring to help Nigeria beat Benin Republic 4-1 and impressing against Niger Republic. His ability to control the midfield has earned him widespread praise.
Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu emphasizes the paramount importance of the opening game against Norway, stressing that a victorious start builds confidence and strengthens their footing in the competition. Zubairu confirmed the team is in excellent shape following a 12-day final training camp in Santiago, where they drew 1-1 with host nation Chile and defeated Australia 3-1 in friendly matches. His backroom staff has meticulously studied Norway’s strengths and weaknesses, integrating observations into their training. Zubairu views the high expectations from Nigerians as a source of motivation rather than a burden, asserting that the team is prepared to succeed without excuses and put smiles on the faces of their supporters.
Norway’s U20 head coach, Bjorn Johansen, acknowledges the unpredictable and challenging threat posed by the Flying Eagles. He notes Nigeria’s physicality and high tempo, admitting they were the most difficult team to analyze. Johansen’s side, making their fourth appearance at the U20 World Cup after qualifying via a penalty shootout against Turkey, has also prepared thoroughly, focusing on controlling phases of play to counter Nigeria’s style. The match, kicking off at 9:00 PM Nigerian time, will be available to watch on DSTV (Supersport), StarTimes, Sporty TV, FIFA PLUS, and beIN SPORTS.
As the Flying Eagles brace for their opener against Norway, the combination of Arierhi’s potent attacking prowess, Kamaldeen’s midfield control, and Coach Zubairu’s strategic leadership fuels optimism. Nigerian fans eagerly anticipate a memorable campaign that could see the team achieve its long-cherished dream of World Cup glory.
